An urgent warning has been issued to dog owners as freezing temperatures continue to sweep across the UK.

According to The Dogs Trust, dogs should be kept away from frozen floodwater because it may contain toxins and submerged hazards.

While splashing in puddles is common practice for dogs, iced-over water may not be thick enough to support their weight and should be avoided.

"Over the last few days, we have experienced all kinds of winter weather across the UK, from heavy rain and winds to snow and ice," says Jenna Kiddie, head of canine behaviour at the Dogs Trust.

"While a frozen pond or flooded field might provide tempting opportunities for your dog to explore, ice can be incredibly dangerous for both you and your dog.

"If you are walking your dog anywhere near frozen lakes or floodwater, keep them on a lead.

"If your dog does go into the water, don't follow them as this could lead to you requiring an emergency rescue, and could cause you serious harm."

Plus, if you're heading out for a winter walk, towel dry your dog and check their paws for any salt or grit as soon as you get home. Grit used for de-icing roads can irritate their paw pads, cause redness, and result in cracking or peeling.

Catrin George, animal wellbeing specialist at Animal Friends Pet Insurance, explains: "The grit and salt from the roads, the dampness from rain or snow and any spills your dog might stumble across while walking can irritate their skin, so you should always wipe their legs, feet and stomach once you're back home."

"As a preventative measure, sensitive dogs could benefit from dog-friendly booties to keep their pads protected in the cold weather. This is especially important for dogs whose paws are chapped or sore."

If you are worried about your dog during the freezing temperatures, call your local vet for advice.
