Disney Channel fans of a certain age lost their minds last month when the network announced plans to revive Wizards of Waverly Place, the sitcom that made Selena Gomez a household name back in the late 2000s.

Tentatively titled Wizards, the new series would follow a grown-up Justin Russo (returning star David Henrie) as he raises his own family and teaches the next generation of spellcasters. Think Girls Meets World or Raven’s Home, only with more rhyming.
The pilot, which featured Gomez as a special guest star, was filmed on Feb. 1, an occasion that meant the world to Henrie, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. Instagramming a photo from set with his real-life daughter, he wrote on Feb. 2, “Last night was very special for me, my baby girl got to see me act for the first time.”
But as any true Wizards fan can attest, everything is not as it seems, and there are still a lot of questions surrounding this revival. What would this new show be about? Which other familiar faces from the original series could we expect to see? And what are the odds of this revival even happening?
Join us in exploring those burning questions (and more!) below, then drop a comment with your thoughts about the Wizards’ next chapter.
What Is the Wizards of Waverly Place Revival About?
According to Disney’s official synopsis, the revival “picks up after a mysterious incident at WizTech, where an adult Justin Russo has left his wizard powers behind, opting for a normal, human life with his wife and two sons. But he gets a surprise when a powerful young wizard in need of training shows up at his door… and Justin must embrace his past to ensure the future of the Wizard World.”
Wizards of Waverly Place Revival Cast: Who’s Returning?
Several members of the original Russo family will have a presence in the revival, most notably David Henrie, who will return in the series-regular role of Justin. Selena Gomez will also reprise the role of Alex, guest-starring in the pilot episode. Both Henrie and Gomez are executive-producing the new series.
Henrie also shared the above photo of himself and Gomez alongside David DeLuise and Maria Canals-Barrera (aka Jerry and Theresa Russo), confirming that they’re “coming back” in the caption.
Though we aren’t expecting to see Jerry and Theresa in the pilot, Henrie’s response to a concerned fan has us convinced that we’ll encounter them further down the road. “We definitely plan on bringing back the original cast for the series order,” Henrie said.
Wizards of Waverly Place Revival Cast: Who’s New?
New faces include Mimi Gianopulos (American Princess) as Justin’s wife Giada, Alkaio Thiele (Call Me Kat) as their older son Roman and Janice LeAnn Brown (Just Roll With It) as a “powerful young wizard” named Billie. Justin and Giada’s younger son, whose name has not been released, is played by Max Matenko (Platonic).
Is Jake T. Austin Returning for the Wizards of Waverly Place Revival?
We don’t officially know how involved Jake T. Austin will be in the Wizards revival, assuming Disney Channel does order it to series, but there’s a good chance he’ll reprise the role of youngest child Max Russo in some capacity. Austin reposted the picture of his TV siblings and parents in an Instagram story, writing, “Wow! Am looking forward to getting together with my Wizards family.” Cryptic!
Is Jennifer Stone Returning for the Wizards of Waverly Place Revival?
Though Harper isn’t an “official” member of the Russo family, it’s hard to imagine Wizards without Alex’s quirky BFF, played by Jennifer Stone for the entirety of the show’s original run.
Stone has neither confirmed nor denied her involvement in the project, but given that she co-hosts a Wizards rewatch podcast with David DeLuise — who appears to be involved in some capacity — it’s likely that we’ll see her guest-star eventually.
Has the Wizards of Waverly Place Revival Been Ordered to Series?
At this moment, Disney Channel has only ordered a pilot episode of the Wizards of Waverly Place revival. But given the immediate and overwhelming interest the project has received from fans, we’d be shocked if the show isn’t picked up to series very soon.
Where Can I Watch the Original Wizards of Waverly Place?
All four seasons of the original Wizards of Waverly Place are currently available to stream on Disney+.
You can also stream 2009’s made-for-TV Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie, as well as the 2013 reunion special The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex.
