Woman buys herself lottery ticket for Christmas, wins $1M
Jan. 27 (UPI) -- A Michigan woman bought a stack of scratch-off lottery tickets to give as gifts and the only one she kept for herself turned out to be a $1 million winner.
The 66-year-old Clinton County woman told Michigan Lottery officials she stopped at Ox's Smoked Meats on West Main Street in Westphalia to pick up some stocking stuffers.
"I bought several lottery tickets to give to family members as Christmas gifts, and this Major Cashword ticket is the only ticket I purchased for myself," the player recalled.
The woman said she scratched off her ticket with her family on Christmas.
"I scratched the ticket on Christmas and thought I won $1,000 because I didn't count all the words right away," she said. "I scanned it on my lottery app and was in complete and total disbelief when $1 million came up on the screen! I showed my husband and kids what I'd won and then immediately locked the ticket in the safe."
The winner said the lottery is a Christmas tradition for her family.
"I give lottery tickets as gifts every year, and my dad has always said that one of these years someone is going to win big. I can't believe it was me! I'm still in shock," she said.
The player said she plans to use some of her winnings to travel and put the rest in savings.
