McKenna Hutchinson had been talking to a guy she met on Hinge for a few days when they decided to meet for drinks that upcoming Friday afternoon. While Hutchinson, a wedding photographer in Charlotte, N.C., doesn't usually plan dates on Fridays (as she prefers to hang out with her friends), she decided to take a chance on this guy.
When the day of their date arrived, Hutchinson, 26, tells PEOPLE exclusively that a few hours before the meeting, she heard from her date, who texted to confirm. So, she got ready. But as she was preparing, she realized there were two different locations he had asked her to meet him at.
She replied to ask which of the two locations she should go to, but she never heard back.
"So now it’s five minutes before we are supposed to meet, and I’ve already accepted that this date isn’t going to happen. I called my mom to complain about Charlotte’s dating scene and how the men here waste your time," she says. "Then he texts me that he has to cancel, and I’m fully writing him off at this point because I don’t tolerate people who waste my time."
"I’m a business owner, I’m busy, I’m social — there are so many things I could be doing. Canceling last-minute is an immediate 'I’m never speaking to this person again' moment," she adds.
The next day, Hutchinson received a text from the guy apologizing for canceling and asking to set up a new date. At that moment, she wanted nothing to do with him. She's always had the mindset of, "If he won’t, someone else will," so she was ready to move on and pursue other options.
"When the text popped up, I had just finished working a long day with multiple photo sessions and hours of driving," she tells PEOPLE. "I was so annoyed when I saw his contact pop up in my phone. While I was waiting for my dinner order, I decided to see how serious he was about seeing me again."
"As a photographer, I always take a deposit for my services to make sure clients are serious about working with me, so I thought, 'Hmmm, maybe this should apply to this man since he’s proven himself to be flaky,' " she adds.
So, Hutchinson decided to ask the guy to Venmo her.
"Venmo me for wasting my time, and I'll forgive you," she texted him.
"Lmao, how much do you want me to Venmo you?" he replied.
"However much my time is worth to you," she added.
Shortly after, she noticed a Venmo notification for $100 pop up on her phone.
"I wasn’t expecting him to Venmo me at all!" Hutchinson says. "Honestly, I thought he’d be annoyed and call me a gold digger or something. I had messaged my friends separately and told them I’d only accept a minimum financial apology of $100, and if he’d sent less, I would’ve refunded him with the memo 'insufficient funds' or something. Once he sent the Venmo, I was like, well ... gotta follow through, so I agreed to the date."
"The night he canceled I hit up one of my friends in Charlotte to get dinner and wine and ended up paying for her dinner so once he sent me the $100 I kind of viewed it as a back payment for the dinner I’d had," she adds.

Not long after, Hutchinson decided to post about the situation on TikTok and to her surprise the video went viral, amassing more than 850,000 views.
"I shared it just as a little laugh for the girls to be like … look what we can do ladies! And wasn’t expecting the video to go as viral as it did," she says.
"The comments have been hilarious. I love TikTok’s community of women," she adds. "They were so supportive a lot of people making comments like 'WRITE THAT DOWN' and that they were going to do the same thing moving forward. I’ve laughed a lot reading them and was shocked that I really didn’t get any hate comments."
And yes, after the exchange, Hutchinson and the guy did end up going on a date.
"We laughed about the Venmo and had a good time but ultimately weren’t compatible and went our separate ways," she says.
