In a viral TikTok, Madison Vaughan captures the sweet exchange she had with her mailman Tim after sending him a farewell letter before her move.

“I’ve lived in the same neighborhood for about 22 years,” Vaughan explains in the video. “I lived down the street from my mom and I’m moving to a new address where he won’t be my mailman anymore. And so I wrote him a card and gave him money for the holidays and thanked him for being my mailman.”

Little did she know, Tim would match her gesture with an equally touching response, bringing her to tears as she read the card on camera.

"He wrote such a thoughtful thing," she says in the clip, sharing portions of the message, which he signs, "It has been a pleasure being your mailman."

"This is my first apartment, I grew up here pretty much, I grew into my adult life," Vaughan continues in the clip. "This ruined me! I'm going to keep it forever."

Over the course of two decades, Tim witnessed significant milestones in Vaughan’s life. “I remember anticipating when he would drop off my school schedule and even my college acceptance letters,” she recalls to PEOPLE.

While Vaughan admits she wasn’t particularly close with Tim, she describes him as a “background character” who was consistently present in her life. Over the years, she noticed the physical toll of Tim’s demanding job. “I’ve watched him get gray hair. I’ve watched his knee get bad over the years as well and I might see him coming and waiting at the bottom of the stairs so he wouldn’t have to walk the flight up,” she shares.

Ironically, Vaughan’s farewell also coincided with Tim’s retirement after nearly three decades of working as a mailman. “He’s been a walking mailman for 27 years, so that’s a long time to be walking 10 miles a day,” Vaughan says.

The video’s popularity sparked a conversation about valuing postal workers and other service industry professionals. Vaughan, who worked in the service industry, says: “I think everyone should have to work in the service industry to understand the importance of being kind and patient towards essential workers. I feel like with any community, we can always be doing more to take care of our surroundings and hopefully give back to the community.”

Similar to Vaughan, many other TikTok users have reflected the impact mailmen and women have had in their lives in the comments.

“My dad was a mailman and he used to come home and tell us about every kind person he came across,” writes one user. Another shares, “My husband is a mailman and he hand writes personal thank you cards for everyone who gives him treats/cards for the holiday.”
