Woman 'Irate' After Her Father Cut Her Off Financially Then Gifted Her Brother $15,000 for His Wedding
The father shared that when his daughter found out about the cash, she was upset because 'money has always been a sore spot' between them
A father says he is in a tough spot after deciding to gift thousands of dollars to his son for his wedding — despite refusing to help his daughter pay off her college loans.
The 52-year-old man shared in a post on Reddit’s popular "Am I The A------" forum that he planned to help his 29-year-old son financially ahead of his marriage to his “fiancée of three years,” which made his 27-year-old daughter unhappy.
“[My future daughter-in-law is] awesome, and I couldn't be prouder of my son,” the father shared on Reddit. “I told him that I'd help pay for his wedding and his mother and I managed to put together $15,000 which should help them have a pretty decent wedding.”
However, he said when his 27-year-old daughter found out about the news, she called him and was "irate” since “money has always been a sore spot between us.” He noted that the issue stemmed back from when she went to college in New York.

Since he and his wife “made too much money for her to get many grants or scholarships,” he said they were only able to “cover one year of tuition at the nice school” and they had to pay “out of pocket” for room and board for her as well. Meanwhile, they were able to pay for their son’s tuition “in full” since he went to a community college.
“I told her that while I am so proud of her for getting into that school, I don't agree with her going to that school since we can’t afford it,” the father shared. “She didn't accept any alternative such as going to a local school or going to a cheaper school in New York. She said that she was going, so I relented.”
He said he paid the bills under her college tuition fund, which totalled about $50,000 and was “done.” He said she then took out loans despite him advising her “against it,” and “she tried having me sign loans in my name to help pay for her education which I did not, which didn't help our relationship.”

He said she eventually was saddled with $150,000 in student loans, and she “frequently asked for money” from her parents to help with. He said they gave her about “$30K - $40K” to help with bills, though they stopped helping “two years ago.” He said ever since they “cut her off financially,” this has led to a “frosty relationship” between them.
"... She blames us for her woes (not taking loans for her and not helping more with her college costs),” he wrote. “It all culminated with her calling in tears, blaming us for her financial condition, calling us terrible parents, and that since we obviously care for our son more, he'll be the only one we have contact with.”

He said that he and his wife tried to assure her that they “still love her so much” and would “make a similar contribution should she get married.” However, he noted that she hasn’t “returned our texts or calls in a while" and they were "pretty beat up about it," before opening the forum to the public.
Several people sided with the Redditor, with one person commenting, “I don’t think you were wrong to give your son money to help with his wedding.”
One person commented that his daughter made that decision to go to an expensive school, and needs to understand the financial burden of that. They wrote, “She made her bed by choosing that school, that degree program, at that price, despite plenty of advisement not to.”
Another said, “Your son only got the same amount she did for school + the extra. You have given her more than enough money. When does it end?”
