A new homeowner says that she didn't sign off on hosting her older sister's birthday party, but her sibling didn't get the message and sent out invites anyway.

In a recent post on Reddit's “Am I the A------?,” the woman, 24, shared that she and her husband, 26, just became first-time homeowners after working “incredibly hard” to achieve their dream.

Something else that has been difficult? Setting boundaries with her close-knit family.

Case in point, the woman wrote that about a week after she and her husband moved into their home, her 26-year-old sister "sent me an invitation to her birthday party, which she planned to hold at our new house."

"I want to note that she had briefly asked me about hosting the party here a few days earlier, and I told her I wasn’t sure because we still had a lot of unpacking to do,” the woman added.

The woman said the guest list included "extended family who live several hours away and would need to stay a night or two."

She tried to smooth things over with her sister, explaining that since they're still settling in, she and her husband aren't prepared to host any kind of "large gathering" — and don't even have "much furniture" yet.

The woman said she offered up a compromise, but that only made things worse.

“I told my sister that we’d be open to having a smaller, more intimate celebration — just immediate family and maybe one or two close friends," the woman wrote.

Instead of finding a way forward, she said her sister just "stopped responding to me."

Things didn't get any better when she went to visit her parents the next day.

"My dad came outside to tell me that they don’t want to see me. He said I was being selfish for turning down my sister’s request, that I had hurt the whole family," she wrote. "Now my family refuses to speak to me until I apologize, and they’ve called me ungrateful and a narcissist."

The woman went on to ask her fellow Redditors if they thought she was in the wrong, but they overwhelmingly took her side.

"You've done nothing wrong," wrote one commenter, who went on to say they were puzzled by the way the woman's dad reacted.

"I don't understand your dad's comment about you hurting the whole family," they added. "That makes no sense."

Meanwhile other commenters had their own theories to explain what went down, saying that perhaps her sister "may have told your family a different story," which could explain their "extreme" reaction.

Others pointed out that they now fully understood why it was so important for the woman to set boundaries with her family.

“It’s utterly ridiculous that they feel like she’s entitled to your space like this," another commenter wrote. "You’d best contact those extended family members before they make travel arrangements, because it doesn’t sound like she’s going to."
