Woman Tells Sister She Wants to Be Paid for Babysitting Her Children; Now She's Being Called 'Selfish' and 'Ungrateful'
A 29-year-old aunt seeks support from the Reddit community after she refuses to provide unpaid childcare for her sister
A woman is seeking advice from the Reddit community after finding herself in a family conflict over babysitting duties.
The 29-year-old woman, who has been caring for her sister’s children for years, recently reached a breaking point and decided to set some boundaries with her sister.
The woman explains in the Reddit post that she first began babysitting her sister’s two children here and there a while back. However, the arrangement has now transformed into a weekly gig.
“What started as the occasional evening has turned into me watching the kids 3-4 times a week, sometimes for entire weekends,” she writes.
The woman explains that her sister, whom she calls Lily in the post, has become so comfortable with the arrangement that she sometimes doesn’t even ask anymore. “She just tells me, ‘You’re free Friday night, right?’ or ‘I’m dropping the kids off in an hour,' " the poster shares.
She did note that Lily is a single mother with a demanding job. And while the 29-year-old has always been happy to help, she feels her own life and responsibilities are being overlooked. The situation came to a head recently when Lily asked her sister for child care so she could go on a trip with her friends. When she declined due to having prior commitment, Lily accused her of being selfish.

“I calmly told her that I love her and the kids, but I can’t keep babysitting for free whenever she wants,” the woman write. “I suggested she look into hiring a sitter…She flipped out, calling me ‘ungrateful’ and saying family should help each other without expecting anything in return.”
Following the disagreement, the woman told her sister she would need to start paying her for her services. The family dispute has now drawn in other relatives with divided opinions. Some support the woman’s desire to establish boundaries, while others believe she should provide childcare to her family.
The poster expresses her conflicted feelings, stating, “I feel bad because I know Lily is struggling, but I also feel like I’m being used.” She also emphasizes that she works full-time and has a life of her own which has been significantly impacted by the added babysitting duties.
While the woman's family has conflicting opinions, many Reddit users have sided with the poster. “You are not a parent, it's okay for you to set boundaries on helping out,” writes one user. Another suggested to include other family members in a babysitting "roster" to distribute the responsibility more evenly.
