Wondering Who Played M3GAN in ‘M3GAN’? Meet the Two (Yes, Two!) Actors
Do you have plans tonight? Cancel them and go watch M3GAN, the best movie of the month, the year, of all time (sorry to Avatar, you tried).
As you’re obviously well aware, M3GAN is about a robotic doll prototype who goes from cute to unhinged in a matter of weeks and starts casually murdering people. All while doing some truly iconic dancing.
And while M3GAN looks very robotic, she is fully played by a person. Actually, two people. Amie Donald played M3GAN when it came to physical movements, while Jenna Davis did her voice work.
Jenna spoke about the role to Teen Vogue, saying, “I feel like with Cady, [M3GAN is] more of under her breath and very personal and can really feel that connection. But with other people, she’s bolder and she’s more outspoken. But she also is, in a way, like Siri. She has those moments where she just spits out very educational facts and different things like that where you can recognize that she is an AI. Because a lot of people think she’s a doll. And she’s not a doll—she’s an AI robot…It was very collaborative with me and the director, and we had a lot of fun with that because overall in the audition process, I was just getting told, ‘We want her really fun.’”
Meanwhile, director Gerard Johnstone told the Los Angeles Times that Aime fully did that running-on-all-fours scene herself: “All of a sudden, we get this video from her mother, where Amie had just figured out how to do this on the carpet at home. And she could run on all fours! Even more than that, she got into it through a little sideways walk which we incorporated into the movie because it was so creepy and unexpected—it was like she was a jungle predator sizing up her prey.”
