In honour of Eating Disorder Awareness Week, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau posted a touching message on Instagram, reflecting on her personal journey with bulimia and offering words of encouragement for those struggling.

“As someone who has gone through an eating disorder and has healed from it, I know that loving ourselves just as we are and diving into our own inner truth is a challenging task,” she wrote in English and French. “We should remind ourselves every day that we are worthy to be loved just the way we are.”

Her post resonated with her 224,000 followers, with many praising her bravery.

“This is real, it talks about struggle, and this inspires people not to be perfect, but to heal and to help people,” wrote one follower.

You have so much courage and grace,” wrote another.

This isn’t the first time the Canadian prime minister’s wife has spoken about her struggles with an eating disorder.

“As many of you know, I suffered from bulimia as a teenager and young adult,” she wrote on her Facebook page last year. “I often felt alone in my struggle, but the moment I started sharing my story was the moment I began my journey to recovery.”

She went on to discuss the power of sharing personal struggles and how it helps to break the stigma.

“It’s by being vulnerable and telling our stories that we can make true healing happen,” she said in her post. “So during Eating Disorders Awareness Week, let’s break the silence – let’s share our stories to end the stigma around eating disorders. When we heal together, we rise together.”

Both Sophie and her husband, Justin Trudeau, are advocates for mental health awareness. Last week on #BellLetsTalkDAy, both of them posting encouraging words to their Instagram pages.
