‘Yummy yum yum!’ Poll finds the best breakfast burrito in Whatcom County
We asked readers where to find the best breakfast burrito in Whatcom County and the votes are in.
The poll had 11 local restaurant options in Whatcom County including Black Sheep, Old Town Cafe, Greene’s Corner and California Tacos and Fresh Juices.
The unscientific poll received 94 votes.
Best breakfast burrito in Whatcom
Banter received 21 votes to top the list of the best breakfast burrito in Whatcom County.
Banter serves breakfast foods, coffee drinks and mimosas in the mornings, and transitions into a dinner and cocktail bar in the evening, serving pork dumplings, smashed potatoes, beer, wine and cocktails.
“The breakfast burrito is the only item on our menu that has not come off the menu in over 4 years, and we don’t expect that to change anytime soon; it’s an iconic dish for us,” Emile Diffley, Banter’s owner wrote in an email to The Bellingham Herald.
As Banter’s breakfast burrito is the restaurant’s best-seller, Diffley believes its popularity comes from its ingredients and customization for dietary restrictions.
“It’s a serious comfort food as some of the ingredients like tater tots and scrambled eggs are quite nostalgic, but it also has some culinary zing from the chipotle lime aioli we make, as well as we sear the tortilla once it’s wrapped to add a textural component,” Diffley wrote.
“A huge thing we have found success with is setting up the breakfast burrito to accommodate nearly any dietary restriction, other than gluten intolerances, and also offering add-ons. This makes it more accessible to a wider audience,” Diffley wrote.
The restaurant is also loved online, receiving a 4.5-star rating from 12 reviews on Yelp.

Banter is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday and is at 114 Prospect St. in Bellingham.
Following Banter with 12 votes was a three-way tie between California Tacos and Fresh Juices, Horseshoe Cafe and Old Town Cafe.
California Tacos and Fresh Juices serves Mexican food, smoothies, snow cones and fresh juices and is open from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily, and is at 4252 Cordata Parkway in Bellingham.
The Horseshoe Cafe restaurant serves breakfast all day, plus burgers, sandwiches, salads, appetizers and full bar. The restaurant is open from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday and is at 113 E. Holly St. in Bellingham.
Old Town Cafe serves breakfast and lunch menus featuring scrambles, pancakes, sandwiches, salads, soups, cocktails, beer and wine. The restaurant is open from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday and is at 316 W. Holly St. in Bellingham.
