A 19th-Century Castle on a Private Island in France Lists for $9.8 Million

Pink granite rock formations and sandy beaches lure travelers to Trégastel, a commune in the Côtes-d’Armor division of Brittany in northwestern France. And, if you’re looking to plant some roots in the area, a 19th-century castle on a private island with shimmering turquoise-blue water lapping its rocky shores just hit the market for $9.78 million. Peter Bos of Bretagne Sud Sotheby’s International Realty holds the one-of-a-kind listing that evokes the spirit of la belle vie.

Known as Château de Costaérès, the neo-Gothic style castle sits near the fishing village of Ploumanac’h and faces the Pink Granite Coast. It was built by Lithuanian-Polish mathematician, engineer, and inventor Bruno Abdank-Abakanowicz in 1895 and originally used as a meeting and exchange place where Polish artists meet, the listing notes. One of those creatives was Henryk Sienkiewicz, a Nobel Prize-winning novelist revered for his historical releases. His visits to the estate served as inspiration for his bestseller, Quo Vadis.

Woodlands lend mystery and enchantment to the castle’s environment.

The private island covers a hectare of land with two sandy beaches accessible along its north and south points. Large boulders flank the east and west rims, and as you move inland, verdant settings composed of 200 species of trees, shrubs, and flowers disperse to slowly reveal the castle’s stone façade in the heart of the island. The four-story home with turrets was meticulously renovated in 1980 to preserve original elements and spaces such as the knights’ and banquet rooms that reflect its journey through time.

Monumental arched doorways and massive stone fireplaces span the residence.

Wood-beam ceilings plus arched stone entryways and windows are key features seen throughout the rambling castle. There are massive fireplaces in the formal living and dining rooms, which also include vintage light fixtures.

Its television room and several terraces provide ample space for entertaining, while five bedrooms are spread across the residence with coastline views of the Atlantic Ocean. You can also hit the sauna or take a dip in the heated swimming pool with massage jets for a little relaxation in total seclusion.

Both sun-soaked beaches at the property are ideal for relaxing, too, or taking a swim. One of the features that makes this island different than most is that at low tide, residents and guests are able to travel between the island and the mainland on foot or by a 4×4 car. This connection also ensures that the island remains equipped with water, electricity, and telephone service.
