He was a baseball legend. And anything that Babe Ruth touched apparently also became legendary. Like, hundreds of thousands of dollars legendary.

This hat, worn by the Bambino himself during a tour of Japan in 1934, sold for $303,000 at auction.

"It's just one of the items sold during the auction on Wednesday, actually, a baseball signed by Ruth and Lou Gehrig and shoes worn by Michael Jordan sold for tens of thousands of dollars," a reporter for HLN says.

Why would a 80-year-old hat be worth that much? CNN asked the same question everyone is thinking.

"The navy blue hat emblazoned with a 'US' logo is believed to be the only hat the legendary slugger wore during the monthlong tour ... except when he swapped the cap for a little leaguer's hat, resulting in the classic photo of the Sultan of Swat with a tiny hat perched on his head."

OK, so it has the rarity factor going for it. Ruth was overseas to play 18 exhibition games in an attempt to calm tensions between the U.S. and Japan.

A hat worn by Joe DiMaggio also made it into the same auction. It sold for $151,000.
