Luckily, there are a few vacation destinations that are still relatively affordable for the middle class this spring. These are some of the top options. Also, learn some travel hacks to save money on your spring break trip.
Greenville, South Carolina
Brenda Cassabon is the manager at TK PR, a public relations agency that gets more media placements for their clients. She is also a Louisville, Kentucky, native who recommended Greenville as an affordable vacation destination.
“Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Greenville offers a truly unique South Carolina experience,” she explained. “Visitors can see some of the most accessible natural attractions in the Southeast nearby, explore Greenville’s completely walkable downtown with a 32-acre urban park featuring Liberty Bridge — a one-of-a-kind pedestrian suspension bridge that curves around a waterfall — at its center and enjoy more than 300 free events annually, from festivals to live music.”
Greenville has plenty of activities for families. Cassabon mentioned that families can “rent a bike at Reedy Rides and cruise the 28-plus-mile Swamp Rabbit Trail, with dozens of shops, restaurants and breweries along the way.”
Kayak places the expected cost of a family vacation in Greenville at $416 for flights and three nights.

Albuquerque, New Mexico
New Mexico has several vacation destinations that are affordable for middle class families. However, you may want to give Albuquerque a closer look. A spokesperson for Heritage Hotels & Resorts explains what the city and Hotel Albuquerque offer middle class households.
They even recommended a specific hotel in the city: “Located in the heart of historic Old Town Albuquerque, Hotel Albuquerque at Old Town offers families a chance to explore the ABQ BioPark — zoo, aquarium and botanical gardens — the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center and the Sandia Peak Tramway for breathtaking views. A five-day trip to Albuquerque should cost around $823 per person, not including flights, according to Budget Your Trip.
Santa Fe and Taos are two other recommended New Mexican cities.
“With affordable hotel rates, low-cost attractions and a mix of outdoor and cultural experiences, New Mexico is a budget-friendly alternative to expensive beach destinations,” they explained. “From exploring Pueblo history to hiking breathtaking desert landscapes, families can create unforgettable memories — without breaking the bank.”
Mt. Washington Valley, New Hampshire
Southern states aren’t the only areas that offer affordable vacation options for middle class families. You can also go to Mt. Washington Valley for an affordable vacation that gives you plenty of things to do.
Kathleen Bennett is a New Hampshire native and the founder of Kathy Bennett Marketing, a digital marketing and public relations consultancy. She explained what makes the area special for travelers.
“I can think of no better place for a fun and affordable family-friendly spring vacation! Many activities are free, and, with ample lodging options, you can always find a place to stay that suits a middle-class family’s budget,” she said. “Early spring is the time for maple sugaring season. In early March, visitors can find local sugar shacks opening for tours and tastings. Several resorts are offering Maple Sugaring Lodging Packages to make it easy and cozy to book an early spring getaway.
“Spring is also when our waterways are abundant, and waterfalls are everywhere. There are many ways to explore local waterfalls, including Diana’s Baths and the tallest falls in New Hampshire, Arethusa Falls.”
Mt. Washington Valley is the home of many beautiful resorts and hotels, but one of the things that makes it special is the trails that accommodate skiers and bikers.
“Here in the valley, you can ski and bike during your vacation, all in the same day!” Bennett said. “In addition to perfectly maintained ski trails, you’ll also find the same for mountain biking. Groups like Upper Saco Valley Land Trust (USVLT), Mt. Washington Valley Trails Association, White Mountains NEMBA and Ride NoCo provide trails that visitors can note for their biking trips.”
Bennett recommended the Visit MWV website as a good resource for learning more about the city and discovering what you can do in the area.
You can find hotels for as little as $70 per night in Mt. Washington Valley, and many of the activities can be self-guided to keep costs down.
