“We’ve spent the last three years crafting a space that we can do all of our favorite things in,” begins Kalin Stovall. “We host dinner parties all the time. I set the mood with candles, dimmed lights, music, and a whimsically set table, while my husband serves as head chef. We work from our home office that also triples as a guest bedroom to host friends and family, and a music room for piano and guitar jams.
Kalin Stovall’s family looks a little different now than it did when she moved into this three-bedroom Williamsburg apartment three-and-a-half years ago. “It started out with just three in 2021 when we were looking to move back to NYC after a year working remotely during COVID. It was an incredibly competitive search, and we were constantly being outbid on apartments! We secured our apartment with an offer above asking price, and a letter to the landlords about ourselves — how we were college sweethearts, newly engaged, with a cat named Olive that we adopted from the streets of Greece,” Kalin begins.
Despite the tough home search, this apartment had all the must-haves Kalin was looking for, like a “great location, good size, abundant natural light, and outdoor space.” But she says the age of the apartment was something they had to consider. “[W]e had to be very mindful to decorate it in a way that enhanced yet matched that aesthetic. It was a challenge, but I embraced it and I think it made the process so much fun!”
She wanted each room to “have a different personality so it serves a different purpose. The living room has teal, brown, and black tones to exude a moodier vibe, good for sinking into the couch and watching movies.” And she says the dining room “highlights natural woods and creams in the south-facing windows that receive the most light. It’s a portal connecting the inside to the outside and our most inviting space — the one that we typically spend the most time in when friends and family are over. Gold and green weave throughout the apartment to add a vibrant yet Zen feel to each room.”
Since moving in, the couple has gotten married, adopted another cat (named Sage), and “welcomed a baby girl named Rosemary. Our kids’ names match our home aesthetic: eclectic, natural, green, warm, and inviting.”
