This $60 Million Aspen Chalet Was Once a Favorite Dining Spot of the Kennedy Clan

In 1959, Bruce J. Polich, a freelance writer and filmmaker, opened an Aspen, Colorado, eatery after relocating from California, The Aspen Times reported. The longstanding restaurant known as The Mother Lode was a favorite of many locals and visiting celebrities, including the Kennedy clan, who often dined there while visiting Silver Queen City. After nearly 50 years in business, the beloved establishment, which the late Polich sold in the early ’70s, closed its doors in 2005, and the downtown property has since reemerged as a contemporary ski chalet.

“The Mother Lode became an Aspen icon and attracted locals and celebrities for 59 years. The Kennedy family were regular guests in the winter,” the publication wrote. On the market for $60 million, the four-floor residence is conveniently positioned at the base of the Aspen Mountain Ski Resort and was most recently listed as a swanky vacation rental at a whopping $375,000 per month, records show.

The building itself dates back to 1886; however, it was converted into a condominium in 2008. Spanning nearly 8,800 square feet, the six-bedroom, 10-bath unit still features the restaurant’s name on the outside, with lots of natural wood and stone finishes and its own elevator inside. Close to 2,600 square feet of outdoor space includes a rooftop terrace with sprawling city and mountain views, cozy fire pits, and a hot tub.

The location puts you a stone’s throw from the town center and the ski slopes. Though, that’s just the beginning, as the clean-lined contemporary home packs in a ton of perks as well, ranging from a game room with an arcade to a gym, a movie theater, a massage room, and a golf simulator. Elsewhere, the digs sport a wood-clad chef’s kitchen and a formal dining area.

“Every corner of this residence evokes the spirit of Aspen’s rich past while catering to modern living,” writes the listing, which is held by Liz Leeds and Debbie Gibson with Slifer Smith & Frampton Real Estate/Forbes Global Properties.

Last year, Colorado clocked its most expensive home sale when a four-acre Aspen estate was snapped up for a record-setting $108 million. According to reports, the buyer was casino tycoon Steve Wynn, and the seller was billionaire businessman Thomas Peterffy. Currently, the state’s priciest listing is a $78 million home in Vail that belongs to biotech entrepreneur Kevin Ness.
