The stunning picture was taken by Johan Vandenhecke and finished top of the abstract category.
It actually shows a bird’s-eye view of the Tatacoa desert in Colombia and is among several images that won a prize at this year’s awards following a jury vote.
Other winners include The Lady Of The Sea, taken by Vietnamese photographer Duy Sinh, which and shows a fishing net thrown from a boat that forms a woman's face.
It took home top prize in the daily life category.
In the documentary category, photographer Marc Le Cornu too first place with a photo of the Jersey Airport Rescue and Firefighting Service training on a burning plane.
In the transportation category, first place went to a photo of a merchant ship navigating in the middle of the ice in the Gulf of Finland, shot by Russian photographer Alexander Sukharev.
But Belgian photographer Sebastien Nagy was crowned overall champion after sweeping three categories – architecture, cityscapes and hotels.
Nagy, from Brussels, whose shot of the colourful roofs of Gran Canaria Island won him the cityscape award, said: “To be named first in a contest where the theme is what we love most, our passion, is incredible and very satisfying!
“This award made me want to test myself in other things and why not, to be able to judge others in my turn one day ;-) .”
The awarded photos were selected in a 10-day vote by members of the jury.
The winner was selected on the average of their overall scores and the number of winning photos per photographer in different categories.
Founder of Aerial Photography Awards Christophe Martin added: "For a first edition, the quality and diversity of the awarded photos demonstrates the evolution of aerial photography and the standards it has reached today.
