Alberta Ferretti is stepping down from her namesake label

Alberta Ferretti has today announced that she will be stepping down from her role of creative director at her namesake label. The designer – who founded the brand in 1980 – will stay on as vice president of the parent company Aeffe Spa (which also owns Moschino and Philosophy Di Lorenzo), but will be appointing a new designer to take creative control of the collections.

"It was the year 1981 when a young woman with many dreams and passions brought her collection to the catwalk for the first time," Ferretti wrote in a statement to press. "I remember those moments as if they were yesterday. The Alberta of that day is in many ways still the Alberta of today, even if in the meantime a small family business has become a company with 1500 employees."

"On September 17th you attended my last fashion show. Yes, it's time for me to make room for a new chapter for my brand, a new narrative. It was a difficult, complicated, but a very thoughtful choice. But today, with serenity and awareness, I inform you of my decision to leave the creative direction of the brand I founded, which bears and will continue to bear my name."

In her statement, Ferretti thanked the many people who had helped to make the brand so successful, including her brother Massimo Ferretti, with whom she started the company, and names including Peter Lindbergh, Steven Meisel, Franca Sozzani, Paolo Roversi. "Without you, my world would never have been the same," she said.

She also added that the new creative director had already been chosen and would be announced very soon. Her final show took place last week, and it's likely that the new creative director will show their first collection in February.

"43 years have passed since my first fashion show," she added. "My enthusiasm and passion for my work and for fashion have not changed, but I believe that at this point in my career it is a right and conscious decision to pave the way for a new creative chapter for the brand that I founded and that will continue to bear my name."
