If you’ve ever watched the red carpet coverage of an awards show, you know the drill. “Who are you wearing tonight?” is typically the first question followed by “how long did it take you to get ready?” Important information if you’re an editor pulling together the fashion and beauty galleries, but for the rest of us, it feels like a bit of a wasted opportunity with stars that we rarely get access to.

During the Oscars earlier this year, Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls, a female empowerment organization creating the hashtag #AskHerMore, which went viral. Inspired by past red carpet frustrations expressed by female actresses like Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Aniston, the call to action was made to encourage change and a movement towards asking better questions.

"There’s nothing wrong with asking ‘Who are you wearing?’” Alee-a Blanco, social media director for the campaign, told CBC. "But it becomes a problem when it’s the only question they are being asked time and time again.“

On Sunday, the 67th Emmy Awards will air, and once again Poehler’s Smart Girls are calling viewers to action with a new hashtag, #SmartGirlsAsk. This time Poehler has partnered with the Television Academy so that questions will be answered on live TV.

Here’s hoping people have better questions than "who are you wearing tonight?”
