If you’re a conversationalist, you know that even in the best relationships, whether it’s with a partner or friend, you might get the feeling that you know everything there is to know about that person. As clinical psychologist Jessica D. Ribeiro, Ph.D, says, deep conversations go beyond the surface level of everyday happenings.

“They explore our beliefs, aspirations, fears, and profound experiences,” she details. “What makes these discussions deep is not just the subject matter, but how they allow individuals to share vulnerabilities, thoughts, and feelings that they typically guard or keep hidden.”

Dr. Ribeiro goes on to say that engaging in deep conversations can help people feel seen and understood, strengthen relationships, build trust, and create a sense of closeness. The question is... how do you get started?

What's the difference between a deep conversation and small talk?

First off, it's important to note that small talk does serve a purpose, according to Dr. Ribeiro — it helps to create a comfortable atmosphere and is essentially a “How’s the weather?” type of conversation. “These interactions are typically brief and do not require emotional investment,” she says. “Deep conversations, however, require more vulnerability, involving exchanges of personal beliefs, feelings, and thoughts that reveal more about the participants' inner worlds.”

How can I start a deep conversation?

Starting a deep conversation might feel intimidating. (Hey, you can keep your favorite pickup lines in your back pocket, just in case for comfort.) But whether you're struggling with your mental health or simply looking for another way to lift your spirits, building a connection with others can make all the difference.

Here are Dr. Ribeiro’s top tips:

  • Choose the right moment and place: Look for a time when both parties are not rushed or distracted. Find a quiet, distraction-free environment where you can truly listen and connect.

  • Listen actively: Show genuine interest in the other person’s thoughts and feelings.

  • Ask open-ended questions: These require more than a 'yes' or 'no' answer and can lead to more expansive dialogue. Try asking, "What makes you say that?" or "Tell me more about that."

  • Share something about yourself: Vulnerability can be contagious. By sharing something personal, you create a space for deeper connection and possible soul ties. By opening up, you may even find your twin flame.
