Once you arrive you will be welcomed by the warm glow of the entryway to the reception. It is based in the luxurious Östermalm district with both historic Gamla Stan or Old Town and cultural hub Djurgården just a short walk from the hotel.

The Style

The decor of the lobby combines a wealth of warm wood, gold accents and plush velvet fabrics. Throughout the hotel, there is a mix of cosy furniture and subtly opulent details. The lighting design is so meticulously curated that it feels impossible to step into harsh light. Vintage glass lampshades with golden bulbs glow in every corner making the space feel warm and inviting.

Having started life in 1910 as the head office of the Södra Sverige Banking company, the building was an interpretation of a renaissance palace with Art Deco details. After serving as several more banks and then a legal library, it has a storied history reflected in its architeture, such as stucco columns and its grand brass entrance.

Which room?

There are rooms and suites to suit every guests. Opt for a Graceful Deluxe Signature room and relax under the rainfall shower as your feet are warmed by the heated tile floor in your spacious bathroom, before rolling into a king-size bed with crisp white sheets and sumptuous feather pillows. Every room includes complimentary Diptyque toiletries, which I missed so much after departing that I added the body lotion to my birthday wish list on the flight home. Bank Hotel is one of only 540 hotels on the globe that meets the highest standards for independent boutique hotels, which translates to an experience feels exclusive and super personal.

Food & Drink

Bank Hotel’s seemingly endless bar and restaurant options include the extravagant Bonnie’s in the old bank hall which dates back to 1910.It is playfully named after the infamous bank robbers Bonnie & Clyde. Service is immaculate from breakfast through to dinner. We recommend the succulent Swedish fillet of beef with béarnaise butter, red wine sauce, French fries and tomato and garlic side salad. If you only have time for a nightcap visit rooftop Le Hibou and order the hotel’s signature cocktail (and apparently the 8th best cocktail in Sweden) the Hoot-Hoot with Bacardi 8, Nikka Straight From The Barrel whisky, ginger, apple, honey and lemon, with a bar snack of warm Marcona almonds with Cajun spice and grilled lime squeezed on top. Divine.

For a unique gastronomic experience take a short walk through the luxury fashion shopping district until you reach Michelin-star holding restaurant Nour for a nine-course Japanese-Swedish fusion extravaganza. Top dishes include the oyster caviar in buckwheat crisp and the salty and sweet salmon roe filled milk buns.

Facilities & extras

For those who are exercise inclined while on holiday, there is a 24-hour gym. Or if R&R is more your thing, the hotel offers in-room massage or facial treatments. Plus there’s the option of a weekly flower service or a Veuve Clicqout Champagne and strawberries delivery. If you want a taste of the hotel’s history and have a date of note in the diary, its old bank vault, La Voûte, is available to book for private dinners and parties.

Top of the list for sightseers is the Fotografiska, a modern photography gallery with incredible prints available to buy in the gift shop featuring works by the iconic Peter Lindburgh. Amble along the historical streets of Gamla Stan, dipping in-and-out of independent art shops and cosy cafes for some Fika (coffee and cake) on your way. There are myriad Archipelago tours by boat, with brilliant local guides. Sit on the top deck to see the islands up close with a reindeer fur throw on your lap to stay cosy.
