Is your beard red and itchy? It could be a sign off too much stress

If the skin under your facial hair is often red, irritated, itchy or flaky, the culprit could be a condition called seborrheic dermatitis.

This is the same condition that causes dandruff on the scalp, but many men do not realize they have it under their beards. Fortunately, seborrheic dermatitis can be treated fairly easily, whether on the scalp or face.

What causes seborrheic dermatitis?

Seborrheic dermatitis is caused by an overgrowth of a specific type of fungus called Malassezia yeast, which triggers inflammation, redness and itching. While many genetic and environmental factors can contribute to the presence of Malassezia, stress is often the underlying cause. Hormonal changes and a weakened immune system can also make you more susceptible.

How to treat a red, itchy beard

To treat seborrheic dermatitis, start with a sulfur-containing wash to reduce the overgrowth of yeast on the skin and to improve flaking, itching and dry patches. Look for products specifically formulated to target seborrheic dermatitis, as they are designed to soothe the skin and prevent further irritation.

Zinc pyrithione is another effective ingredient commonly used to treat dandruff, as it has antimicrobial and antifungal properties and can soothe inflamed skin.

How to prevent seborrheic dermatitis

Flaking, itching and redness caused by seborrheic dermatitis can affect the scalp, beard area and even under your eyebrows. There are, however, several things you can do to help prevent this common skin problem in the future:

  • Stress management. Since stress can exacerbate seborrheic dermatitis, incorporating stress-reducing activities like exercise, meditation or hobbies into your routine can help keep flare-ups at bay.

  • Skincare routine. Maintain a regular skincare routine that includes gentle cleansing and moisturizing. Avoid harsh soaps or products that can strip your skin of its natural oils, which can worsen dryness and irritation.

  • Anti-inflammatory diet. Incorporate anti-inflammatory foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts and fatty fish into your diet. These foods can help reduce inflammation in your body and improve skin health.
