After the holidays, spending money may not be top of mind. However, savvy shoppers know that January is one of the best times of the year to shop for deals.
With major discounts on everything from winter clothing to holiday decor, when you shop smart this month you could save yourself hundreds of dollars on essentials for the year ahead.
If you’re looking to jumpstart 2020 with savings, read on to find out which items are worth shelling out for this month, and what you’re better off holding out on.

Winter Apparel
As retailers begin receiving new spring merchandise, they want to clear out last season’s styles, meaning shoppers can take advantage of the best sales this month. Look for seasonal items like outerwear and boots at deep discounts, which can be up to 70 per cent off the regular retail price.

Holiday Decor
It’s no surprise that following the holidays, retailers are keen to sell off decorations — and fast. If you don’t mind browsing, you’ll find everything you need to update your home for the season (next holiday season, that is). Just be sure to act fast, because the longer you wait, the smaller the selection will be.

Fitness Gear
For many people, January is the time to kickstart their New Year’s resolutions, often including a vow to get in better shape. Use this month to take advantage of promotions while signing up at fitness centres, or to buy big-ticket items to create your own gym at home for a great price.

Bedding and Linens
A retail tradition that’s been around since 1878 when John Wanamaker (the pioneering father of department stores and marketing) hosted the first major sale on linens and bedding continues to this day. January is an ideal time to stock up on towels, sheets, and bedding as retailers make way for new spring styles.

Toys
The last couple of weeks before the holidays is the absolute best time of the year to find deals on toys, and now that the kids have received the latest and greatest toys and games, don’t expect to find many savings in this category.
Mattresses
Mattress companies tend to roll out new models in May, so your best bet will be to wait until later in the year. Start shopping in April, or hold off until holiday weekends, when many furniture stores start to offer blowout prices.
Jewellery
If you’re looking to add to your jewellery collection or plan to shop for someone special, wait until February when department stores and specialty retailers will be offering sales in the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day.
