According to Amie Heenan, bra expert and owner of Melmira Bra & Swimsuits in Toronto, you'll want to look for a bra that embraces your breast shape while lifting and supporting but it's clear that finding the right one isn't as easy as it seems. That's why we're turning to the experts

What to look for in a bra: Expert

When it comes to discovering your true bra size, Heenan said it's important to be fit by a professional and to explore your size in the fitting room — as sizes can vary based on various factors like designer, style and fabric.

She also brought up one common bra mistake.

"Many women go too big in the back to compensate for the cup," Heenan explained. "For example, if you think you're a 38C, chances are you're actually a 36D or even a 34DD."

If you're struggling to find a bra with the proper support, Heenan said it's all about balance.

"The right support lifts you halfway between your elbow and shoulder, giving a nice, round shape," she siad.

She also emphasized the uniqueness of women's shapes and the importance of exploring different styles with a professional fitter.

How to know if a bra doesn't fit right

When it comes to ill fit, Heenan flagged some common signs.

"The bra riding up the back, the straps falling off the shoulders, the breast falling out from underneath the cup or leaving strong marks on the body, the cup sitting too high under the arm and generally an instinct that it’s not comfortable," she said. "If it's not comfortable. Something's off with the fit."

It's also important to know when to replace your bras and invest in new ones.

"Quality bras, with proper care, can last about a year," Heenan advised. "But when it starts riding up, wires poke through or the cup loses its lift, it's time for a new one."

Best bras for big chests: Expert

Heenan explained that when it comes to the best bras for large breasts, it's all about details. The fabrics, seams, straps and cup depth all "play a role in supporting different breast sizes and shapes."

"For larger chests, a bra that lifts and brings the breasts in from the side is most flattering," Heenan explained. "Think seams, structured cups or strong lace."

She mentioned the elegance of a three-part lace cup and the flattering lift of a demi style.

"A three-part lace cup, one that distributes the breast pressure in both directions can be incredible and really work to lift the breast in the cup," she added. "A demi is also a lovely style on a large chest as the placement of the strap and construction of the seam wraps around the breast in such a way that Iifts and defines the waste."

If a woman has a full bust and a very small frame or narrow shoulder, Heenan suggested that a full coverage centre life is the best option.

"A strong lace-like tool is going to be smooth but lift like a seam. Working with the correct underwire width also plays a factor as it's important to fully encapsulate the breast in order to maximize support," Heenan added.

Heenan also noted that while many women opt for a minimizer to reduce the projection of their breasts, it's not the most flattering style under clothing and tends to create more roundness and fullness.

"When the breast projection is minimized, it creates an east/west shape. Instead of minimizing the breast, it is worth exploring a bra that lifts and brings your breasts in from the side, minimizing the circumference, lengthening the waist and really the entire figure," she explained.
