The best (and worst) boots for a Canadian winter

Ah, winter. It's that magical time of the year where everything smells like gingerbread and fluffy white snow gently coats the ground.

Or, if you live in Canada, you're up to your knees in hard snow and slipping across icy sidewalks.

Falling on your butt is the absolute worst - and according to a recent study, only 8 per cent of winter boots are up to the task of keeping you upright.

While it's sometimes funny to laugh at you friend who's fallen into a snowbank, injuries due to falling on snow or ice can be pretty serious. In Ontario, it's estimated that more than 20,000 people go to the hospital for falling in winter weather — and that as we get older we're less likely to go out as a way of coping with it.

In a first of it's kind in the world, researchers at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute have created a method of assessing how safe boots are in winter conditions. The team tested 98 pairs of casual and safety boots, and the results were pretty dismal - only five of the casual pairs passed.
