Eilish is up again for Best Song for the filmâs track âWhat Was I Made For?â
Eilish and her brother, Finneas, spoke to Entertainment Weekly in December about creating the acclaimed song. It having Oscar buzz, âitâs surreal,â Eilish said. âThe fact that we were nominated in the first place for âNo Time to Dieâ was insane.â
Eilish recalled that she was asked to write âWhat Was I Made For?â during âa dark, slow period of time.â
âI was also in a weird place mentally in my life,â she explained. âWe were in the studio and did come up with stuff, but nothing felt right [for my next album]. I donât think I was able to be vulnerable and self-aware about my life and surroundings. That makes it hard to write sometimes. When we had this new thing to write about that wasnât [about] my life, it was almost relieving. I didnât have to worry about how I felt. I could just write from the perspective of this character. What was amazing is immediately after, I realized it was absolutely about me and my life. I didnât even mean to do that.â
Eilish added that she did not foresee the song having the resonance it has had, especially on TikTok. âI was pleasantly surprised,â she said. âThat happens every time. Every time we make a song, itâs still, âOh my God, I hope people like it.ââ
