A woman is turning to Reddit for advice after a disappointing birthday experience with her boyfriend.

“My birthday was last week, and my boyfriend (23M) and I(23F) had been planning for months to celebrate together,” she writes in her post. However, just one day before the event, he informed her that he couldn’t come because he didn’t have access to a car.

Feeling frustrated and abandoned, she decided to make new plans with her friends instead. When he found out, he was less concerned about missing her birthday and more upset that she didn’t seem devastated by his absence.

“He felt like I didn’t care that he wasn’t coming and that I ‘moved on too quickly’ by making other plans,” she explains. This led to an argument in which he accused her of not being emotionally affected enough by absence.

The situation escalated when he went behind her back to plan a surprise birthday celebration with her best friend — something she had previously told him not to do. “I wasn’t comfortable with him texting my best friends about this,” she states.

To make matters worse, the surprise plan disrupted her already-set plans with other friends. She ultimately declined to participate in the newly arranged gathering.

He didn't show up to the party, but came over to celebrate three days later. The woman put in significant effort, dressing up, skipping classes and even writing him a heartfelt letter about their love.

However, she was disappointed when he arrived with only a bouquet of flowers. While she wasn’t expecting an extravagant gift, she had reason to believe he would follow through on a promise they discussed.

“We had already talked about my birthday gift before,” she notes. “He originally wanted to get me a necklace with his name on it, but I had told him I preferred a promise ring.” She provided her ring size and thought everything was set. Yet, on the day of the belated celebration, there was no ring.

Instead, he claimed to have ordered a gift basket full of chocolates, which he said never arrived due to a scam. “Honestly, I don’t know if I believe him,” she admits, pointing out that he usually provides proof of purchases but failed to do so this time.

His lack of transparency left her feeling even more doubtful. Ultimately, she is now questioning whether her disappointment is valid or if she is overreacting. While many Redditors sympathize with her, they also suggest she reconsider her priorities.

“This relationship is definitely lopsided and it might be a good idea to reassess it. He definitely dropped the ball,” one user writes. “That being said, skipping three classes and writing a five page hand written letter is over the top.”

Another writes, “I’d be upset if he missed my birthday too but definitely wouldn’t have “gifted” him. It’s supposed to be the other way around.”
