Blates are the latest 2025 dining trend — here's why everyone’s eating them up right now
One of the most sizzling dining trends to emerge this year has to be blates. We’re talking crockery that sits somewhere between a bowl and a plate. The result? Casual dinnerware that's perfect for just about everything, from saucy dishes to sweet treats.
The blates trend first emerged in 2022, and since, we’ve gradually seen blates popping up everywhere, and so have design pros. Below, the experts delve into why they’re such a popular 2025 design trend and what to look out for when shopping for your own.
Why are blates on-trend right now?
We know that casual dining experiences are a big dining room trend for 2025 and blates are a direct response to this laid-back way of living, with research from Habitat revealing that 78 per cent of Brits now eat dinner on the sofa.
‘We’re seeing customers increasingly looking for a more relaxed way of dining – at Habitat we’ve sold 20 per cent more bowls than dinner plates across the last years as people seek to dine on the sofa with ease,’ explains Kate Gibson, head of buying for tabletops at Habitat. 'In response, our design team has introduced blates this season – the perfect hybrid between a bowl and a plate.’
With their wide, shallow silhouette, not only do blates work for comforting meals at home, but they also boast plenty of nifty space-saving design features too.

Are blates useful?
The shape of blates make them practically perfect in every way. ‘Less splashing during transport from kitchen to table and easier stacking in cupboards than traditional bowls are the big reasons why they’re helpful to have in the kitchen,’ explains Josephine Jenno, founder of Casa By Josephine Jenno. They also solve the existential crisis of, 'Is this more of a plate meal or a bowl meal?’ – a daily debate many people can relate to.
'They're perfect for modern family-style dining, where dishes defy traditional categorisation,' adds Josephine. 'Your Thai-fusion-meets-Mediterranean spread finally has a home that makes sense.'
What to consider when shopping for blates
Want to get in on the trend? 'Look for a low and flat-bottomed vessel – something you might typically call a pasta bowl,' suggests Josephine. As with all tableware, it’s also a good idea to choose a scratch-resistant and dishwasher-safe design.
