Dog pedicures: Nail art isn’t just for humans

If neon-tinted 'dos and sparkly feathered lashes have your human eyes popping this season, wait until you see what doggie stylists have in store for your pet pooch.

Doggie nail art is all the rage, reports Jezebel in a story about the new trend in pooch pedicures. From flowers to sports team logos to glam shades, your canine companion can have as much fun at the spa as you do. Maybe.

Elsie Tang, co-owner of Pawfect Spa Limited in Toronto, a spa with a focus on dog styling, says that unlike fur dying — which clients normally reserve for special occasions like Halloween or Valentine's Day — their "pawdicures" are more breed specific and can be done during a regular grooming session.

"Smaller dogs, especially those yorkies or poodles," says Tang. "Because those breeds, especially the poodles, they shave their feet so the nail polish is exposed. Otherwise for other ones, the hair will cover it. "

Jenn Stooke, owner of Roxy Dog Grooming in Hamilton, says she only has one client who has asked for a pink "pawdicure" for her teacup poodle, but agrees with Tang about it being better suited to specific breeds.

"If the fur is really short around the nail, you can get it on there but it does take a while," she says. "You've got to dry it, you've got to make sure that the dog stands still. If it's a fidgety little dog, there's no way you're going to be able to do a proper job on the nails."

Stooke, whose approach to dog health and dog care is all natural and holistic, dismisses the notion that doggie nail polish, which is created specifically for pooches and can be purchased through online pet supply stores, can be dangerous or unhealthy to dogs.

"They have tiny little nails, they have a little bit of nail polish on them and it wears off," she says. "I wouldn't use nail polish remover on the dog. I also wouldn't use any flea control or pesticide type products on my dogs, and that to me is much worse than using doggie nail polish."

Tang says some of her clients take doggie nail art a step further by bringing her decorated plastic caps to apply on her canine client's nails — a deterrent to clawing up the furniture. Kind of like Lee Press-On Nails.
