  • A bride's maid of honor, her best friend of 10 years, unexpectedly dropped out of the wedding just four days before the big day

  • The friend lied to the bride, saying she needed to miss the wedding because her father had suffered a stroke. In reality, she planned to meet up with a man she met two weeks ago on the dating app Tinder

  • When she learned of the betrayal, the bride was in tears and confused about how to handle the situation

A woman backed out of her maid of honor duties just four days before her best friend's wedding to meet up with a man from Tinder.

To make matters worse, the woman lied about the reason why she wasn't attending the nuptials, the bride explained in a post on Reddit's "Wedding Drama" forum. When her "bestie for a decade" dropped out so close to her big day, the bride was confused and worried, thinking surely something serious must have happened.

"I was like, 'Did I say something wrong? Did I do anything to upset her?' She said 'no' and said the reason why was because her dad was sick," the bride wrote.

During a brief phone call, the former maid of honor told the bride that her father had "a mild stroke," but didn't give any other details. This worried the bride because she considers her friend's father to be a second dad to her, but figured it was a family matter so she didn't press any further.

"At first, I wholeheartedly agreed that it’s okay for her to not come because it was obviously an emergency," the poster said.

But her feelings changed a few hours later when her friend's father called her.

"[He] told me how excited he was for my wedding and that he would see me there soon," she recalled. "I was like, 'Huh?' "

The bride told him to get well soon and to not force himself on a plane if he needed to rest.

"That’s when everything started going down," she continued. "Her dad was confused and asked what I was talking about. I told him that my BFF said he had a stroke. Apparently I was on loud speaker because my BFF's mom suddenly jumped on the call too and said that they were both fine."

After she finished her conversation with the couple, the bride immediately called her friend for an explanation.

"But the call went straight to voicemail. Nothing on FaceTime too," she wrote. "When I decided to call her on Instagram and Messenger, that’s when I realized she had blocked me, my fiancé, my family, my friends and everyone that knew both of us."

This sent the bride into an immediate panic. But one person the woman forgot to block was the groom's best friend, who called the bride and said he needed to screen-share something with her as soon as possible.

"She was on a flight on the way to Maldives the day she told me her dad was sick. That’s when I realized why the background of our previous call was so noisy. She wasn’t in a hospital. She was at the airport," the poster said. "And I recognized who the guy was with her and it was the same guy she met on Tinder two weeks before my wedding."

She continued: "My heart literally sank to my stomach but I was refusing to believe that this was happening."

The bride called her friend over and over until she picked up the phone. Eventually, the woman answered, asking, "What now?" The bride demanded answers, to which her friend said something along the lines of "Ugh, here we go. You go ahead, I’m finishing up here" — clearly with the man from Tinder.

"Her reply was the most painful thing I ever heard from someone’s best friend," the bride wrote.

The woman told her, "Listen, you always get everything you want. It’s time for me to do the same," which caused her to be "full on crying."

Besides not valuing the friendship, the bride asked her friend if she even cared about all the money she had spent on her for the wedding.

"I asked what about the dress, the shoes, the hotel, the flight, the food and the glam team I paid for so she had nothing to worry about," she wrote. "All she said was, 'I don’t see that as a problem. You’re rich, right? Pay for it.' "

The ex-friend hung up, leaving the bride in tears.

"I cried the whole night and yesterday [so much] that my makeup artist literally told me to stop because I might get stuck with puffy, red eyes on the big day," the bride said. "I don’t know what I’m gonna say to her parents because they’re already here at the hotel and resort where my wedding’s happening. I literally haven’t told anyone about it yet. I’m trying to bottle it up for now because I need to make the most out of my wedding day."

Reddit users in the comments section advised the bride to not let the drama drag down her day and to be discreet when people ask where her maid of honor is. They additionally urged her to end the friendship after the wedding.

"Do not let her ruin your wedding day," one person wrote in part. "Pretend she never existed and go on to have the best day of your life. Thinking about her one second more means she wins, and she can’t win."

"You didn’t do anything wrong. If anyone asks where she is, just say she opted not to attend," another Redditor commented, with someone else adding: "If you tell everyone the real reason before, it will be the talk of the wedding and the focus won't be on you and your partner."
