Cantilevered home ‘floating in the air’ for sale in Ukiah for $2.45M. See California gem
A cantilevered home in Northern California’s wine country is “one of the most iconic residential compounds ever conceived in Mendocino County,” according to Sotheby’s International Realty.
A marvel of architectural and engineering design, the stunning residence sitting on nearly 100 acres is for sale for $2.45 million. Called the Sky House, the home appears to be floating in the air.
Located at 241 Henry Station Road in Ukiah, the signature property was owned by the late Max Schlienger. Schlienger, an accomplished engineer, invented a train system that was believed to be a competitor to the “hyperloop” high-speed transportation system championed by Elon Musk.
Schlienger built a life-size model for the train system on his property.
“The rail system was constructed on a lower flat area below the residence,” listing agent Kevin McDonald of Sotheby’s International Realty - Wine Country, Sonoma Brokerage, said in an email. “The family is in the process of removing the system.”
McDonald is not “overly familiar” with the train system, but “I can speak to the unique attributes of the home and land.”
Unique it is.
The main three-bedroom, three-bathroom home spans 3,328 square feet. From its hilltop perch, the residence takes in sweeping views of the mountains, valleys and vineyards. A guest house and garage are connected to the Sky House by a suspended breezeway.
“As if floating in the air, the cantilevered Sky House residence is perfectly set on the side of the hilltop amongst a canopy of shade trees, surrounded by lush manicured zen inspired gardens,” the property listing states.
The property is accessed via a long private driveway at the valley floor which meanders through areas of native grasslands and California Valley Oaks on its way up to the hilltop residence.
“Every angle of the compound includes its own compelling view,” according to the property listing. “Elevated and refined, The Sky House fuses architectural ingenuity with a dynamic natural landscape to create an unparalleled offering.”
Other amenities include two fireplaces, an expansive deck and a wine cellar grotto.
Ukiah is about 145 miles northwest of Sacramento.
