Classic Cheddar Sausage Balls Will Get You Through the Holidays

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 c.

    all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled

  • 1 1/2 tsp.

    baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp.

    kosher salt

  • 1/2 tsp.

    freshly grated black pepper

  • 1/4 tsp.

    cayenne pepper

  • 1/2 c.

    coarsely grated yellow onion

  • 8 oz.

    sharp cheddar cheese, grated (about 2 cups)

  • 1 lb.

    loose pork breakfast sausage

  • 3 tbsp.

    unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 tbsp.

    chopped fresh sage, plus small leaves for garnish

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper in a bowl. Add onion, cheddar, sausage, butter, and sage and mix until fully combined (it’s easiest to do this with clean hands.)

  2. Scoop sausage balls (about 1 tablespoon each) onto a large rimmed baking sheet, leaving 1 inch between each. Gently press a small sage leaf into the top of each sausage ball. Bake until golden brown, 23 to 25 minutes.
