Natalya and Andrew Batchman were excited for their first night out without kids in more than a year. But the evening took a terrifying turn when they got into a serious car accident on their way home.

Natayla, sporting a bruised face, recalled the moment in a viral TikTok.

“One minute you're on a date with your husband without the kids and the next you're crawling out the sunroof from a car accident,” Natalya wrote in the now-viral clip.

The severity of the accident became apparent as the couple described the moments leading up to and following the crash.

"We were having a great time with each other," Andrew tells PEOPLE of their dinner out. “When it came down to dessert time, we were like, ‘Okay, this is the longest we’ve been away from the baby.' When we called my parents, they said our youngest had been crying and was ready to be picked up.”

As they approached their destination, an unexpected icy turn caught Andrew off guard. The car lost control, sliding into a ditch. “There’s a ditch with a 10-foot drop pond to the left of us and then to the right is the ditch,” Natalya explains to PEOPLE.

The vehicle thankfully slid into the ditch, but the impact was so severe that it deployed all the airbags. “We definitely felt the abrupt stop," Andrew says.

Following the impact, smoke filled the air from the airbags, and the couple found themselves trapped inside the vehicle. “I was panicking because I couldn’t see the door handle, and I was trying to figure out a way to get out,” Natalya shares.

Andrew miraculously managed to open the sunroof, allowing them to escape. The accident left Natalya with facial injuries from the airbag deployment, while Andrew sustained minor scrapes on his arm. Their vehicle was completely totaled.

After climbing out of the vehicle’s sunroof, Natalya’s maternal instincts kicked into high gear as she began running toward her in-laws’ home. “I was outwardly praying,” she explains. Natalya’s first thought was for her children as she ran the quarter-mile to reach her son and daughter.
