Sarah tells PEOPLE what it was like sharing the news with family and friends
One couple learned that modern medicine isn't always right about a baby's sex.
Sarah Pilon tells PEOPLE that she and her husband were expecting their second baby, a boy, when they got quite the surprise.
"This was our second pregnancy that the test was actually wrong! We did an at-home blood test and sent it in at 16 weeks. We did a small gender reveal with family and that was about it," Sarah shares.
"I joked the entire pregnancy that there was a small chance the baby was a girl because the test said if it came back girl that it was 100% accurate, but if it says boy that there is a tiny chance the sample could have been contaminated if there are men living in the same house," she shares, adding that knowing she was going to have a home birth, she didn't have an ultrasound this time around. "I had no indication during the pregnancy but I do remember that the baby felt higher than my son ever was, but I didn’t really think anything of it during the pregnancy."
When it came time for Sarah to deliver, nothing went quite according to plan.

"The delivery was wild cause she came really fast and our midwife actually missed the birth. So I was in our tub when she was born and my husband was there with one leg in the tub, ready to help cause she was coming whether we were ready or not," Sarah shares.
"I was able to catch her myself, which was so cool! My husband was actually the one to look to verify that the baby was a boy a few minutes after the birth and he goes, 'Ummm... it’s a girl!' And I was like 'WHAT?!' It was hilarious!"
"I had zero girl things," she continues. "She was nameless for about 24 hours because we never even considered a girl name. About two days after she was born, we had about 20 Amazon boxes on our porch filled with baby girl clothes and so many pink things and bows for her. It was great!!"
It was a shock and adjustment for the parents — despite being in a similar situation the first time around — but even more of a shock to their toddler son, who was eagerly awaiting a baby brother.
"It was funny trying to explain to our 2-year-old son that the brother we’d been preparing him for was actually a sister," she laughs.
The family also had fun sharing the news with extended family.
"When we were like 'Surprise! It’s a girl!' everyone was freaking out!" Sarah says. "We really got a kick out of FaceTiming family and friends when we finally got a bow for her little head and everyone’s faces were just pure shock. It was really fun and exciting."
