All The Details On Adelaide Cottage, Prince William And Kate Middleton's Likely New Home
Prince William and Kate Middleton are moving house. And by that I mean they're moving mansions.
Actually, technically they're going from a 'hall' to a cottage,' but trust us—there is nothing cottage-y about their new place.
Prince William and Middleton are moving to Windsor in order to be both closer to the Queen and closer to London (where their kids attend school), and there are only so many places they can live.
First of all, they need a property on royal grounds, and there are only a few available.
And apparently the most suitable option for the Cambridges is Adelaide Cottage, which has become just slightly dramatic due to Princess Eugenie, but more on that in a minute.
So what do we know about this massive house masquerading as a wee country cottage? Ahem:
Princess Margaret's 'Lover' Used to Live In It
Margaret's boyfriend, Group Captain Peter Townsend, chilled in Adelaide Cottage from 1944 to 1952.
Fans of The Crown will remember the saga that was Margaret and Peter's relationship—but if you're wondering why he lived on royal property, that'd be because he was was equerry to King George VI from 1944 to 1952.
Meanwhile, The Daily Mail reported the most recent person to live in Adelaide Cottage was Simon Rhodes, who is the son of the Queen’s cousin Margaret Rhodes.
The Home Is Currently Used as a 'Grace and Favour' Residence
According to Merriam-Webster, it is 'a habitation granted rent-free (as to a retainer) by the English royal household.'
So essentially, the royals allow people—like Peter Townsend—to live there rent-free.
It's 10 Minutes Away From the Queen
Adelaide Cottage is located in Home Park in Windsor, and a short walk from the Queen at Windsor Castle.
FYI, Home Park is fully private, administered by the royal estate, and is also where Frogmore House and Frogmore Cottage are located. (Prince Harry and Meghan Markle live in Frogmore Cottage when they're in England).
Here's a photo of the area so you can get a literal lay of the land:
It's Made From Parts of the Royal Lodge
Which is where Prince Andrew currently lives, right by the Queen.
Yes, Adelaide Was a Real Person
Queen Adelaide was the wife of England's King William IV, and this house was made for her in 1831. It's decorated with furnishings from the Royal Lodge as well as ornamental decoration from an old yacht—including some casual gilded dolphins.
Princess Eugenie Also Wants to Live There
According to The Daily Mail, Prince Andrew wanted Adelaide Cottage for Princess Eugenie—who’s been living with her husband Jack Brooksbank and their son, August, in Frogmore Cottage while the Sussexes are in the States.
Sources 'close to the Yorks' told the Daily Mail that Eugenie 'had been trying to secure Adelaide Cottage for a while for when she moves out of Frogmore' and 'before Andrew’s most recent scandal, it was definitely a property he was [also] trying to secure for his daughter'.
It’s unclear if Eugenie is still interested in the cottage, but 'there is no doubt' that the Cambridges will get first pick due to being heirs to the throne and whatnot.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Considered Moving There
At the time, a source told The Daily Mail: 'The Queen has offered the Grade II listed property to the newlyweds as a gift. '
The source claimed the couple had viewed it, was fond and will move in soon.
Of course, that did not end up happening, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle now reside in California.
