Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's first date has always been shrouded in secrecy. During the couple's first sit-down interview following the announcement of their engagement, Prince Harry shared: "We were introduced actually by a mutual friend, who we will ..." But Meghan quickly jumped in to ensure their friend's privacy. "We should protect her privacy and not reveal too much of that," she said.

Some have suggested that mutual friend who set them up might be fashion designer Misha Nonoo; others thought it was Ralph Lauren PR director Violet von Westenholz. Surprising, the matchmaker's name still remains something of a mystery, but today, new details about that initial meeting are being made public.

Finding Freedom, a forthcoming biography of the Sussexes by reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, is currently being serialized in the Times and the Sunday Times ahead of its publication later this summer. An excerpt published online today chronicles the couple's early courtship.

While Harry and Meghan were not interviewed for the book, it offers new insight into their relationship, and of their first date at Soho House’s Dean Street Townhouse.

"It didn’t take long for them to start chatting easily. Very easily. On two individual velvet club chairs, the pair were 'in their own little world,'" a source told writers Scobie and Durand.

"Over drinks (beer for him, a martini for her), they asked each other questions about their work. Nibbles may have been out on the low table in front of their oversize chairs, but neither touched the food. They were also too engrossed in their conversation, and too involved with each other, to notice the rather rude wallpaper featuring photos of women’s private parts that adorned the walls."

By the sounds of it, they mostly talked about their shared passion for charity work, and after the nearly 3-hour-long date, they parted ways without so much as a kiss. But that doesn't mean the evening went poorly.

"Despite the palpable attraction between them, there was no goodbye kiss, no expectation, just a hint that something was there and they hoped to see each other again soon," explain Scobie and Durand.

Indeed, they saw each other again very soon.

A friend told the authors that "almost immediately they were almost obsessed with each other." They had dinner together at Soho House the next night, and have essentially been together ever since.
