'I've always been on my own wave and feeling out my own thing,' Dina Asher-Smith, the sprinter and 200m world champion, tells ELLE UK. This perhaps isn't surprising to hear from a record-breaking athlete who holds the title of the fastest woman in British history. Being fiercely independent, quietly confident and fearless are crucial attributes in her career. But for Asher-Smith, going against the grain is also something that's in her DNA, whether she's calling for change on the effects of period performance, challenging the status quo or using fashion to address opportunities for women in sport.

Her approach to beauty and wellness takes an equally refreshing turn. 'I don't really have anyone I look up to or any beauty muses, I just do what I like in the most respectful way,' she says. And what she likes is experimenting with bold make-up. Asher-Smith is often on the track in a full face of make-up, pops of vibrant blusher and bold eyeshadow, while her extensive pre-race skincare routine takes upwards of an hour, and features double cleansing, face mask rituals and setting sprays.

Below, Asher-Smith speaks to ELLE UK about the fine balancing act of elite level training and looking after her wellbeing, her extensive skincare routine and race day beauty regime...

On wearing make-up on the track...

'For me, it's just about having fun and being vibrant and a commitment to putting on a show. At athletics events, there is often lots of waiting around in the days before you compete and so I like to experiment and be creative with my make-up. I always wear make-up during a race and honestly it doesn't really impact how I feel. I’m there to run and there to run fast. With my make-up that’s just me being me and I like to show up as myself.'

On her approach to wellness and Olympics training...

'My overall approach to training for the Olympics is trying to be the best person that I can be and the fastest athlete I can be. I approach my wellness in the same way, just trying to be the best that I can be. Eating a diet that’s prioritised for performance and staying hydrated in the heat, and sleeping well so I recover fully is key for me.'

On the meaning of beauty...

'Beauty is happiness from within, it’s confidence, and it’s also caring about others. Beauty should be positive and uplifting as opposed to praying on insecurities. For me, beauty is also about caring for the environment and the impact we and the industry have on the planet.'

On her race day beauty routine

'Setting spray is a must (Kyrolan Fixing Spray, to be exact) – especially in the heat with sweaty warm-ups and racing in very hot countries. Post-race, to remove my make-up, sweat and any impurities away, I always use a nourishing cleansing balm like Noble Panacea’s The Elemental Cleansing Balm & Exfoliating Refiner – the two-step treatment provides a deep cleanse that doesn’t jeopardise my skin barrier and leaves my skin ultra smooth.'

On her skincare non-negotiables…

'As I'm currently living and training in Texas, sunscreen is now definitely number one! The new Noble Panacea Multi-Defense Cream SPF50 is my go-to. The individual doses are great for keeping in your bag and make it easy to reapply throughout the day which is so important. My other non-negotiables are Vitamin C and a good skincare oil for radiant skin at all times. The Noble Panacea Exceptional Vitamin C Booster and The Brilliant Glow Hydration Oil ensure my skin is balanced, hydrated and glowing.'
