Do you need HD makeup? Here’s the scoop

If you enjoy makeup, you’ll agree that perusing Sephora is one of life’s greatest joys.

There are certain products I always come across that pique my curiosity every time, but that I’ve never actually tried. Mostly, I’m talking about high-definition makeup. Nevermind the ads, the packaging alone for Make Up For Ever’s HD line almost makes me believe that if I smear some of that foundation on, I too can be Jennifer Lopez.

I took a small sample of the Make Up Forever HD fluid foundation home (because at $50 CAD for a 1 oz. bottle, you want to be sure) and applied it with a beauty blender expecting to acquire an Oscar-worthy glow. I half anticipated a Hollywood agent to stop me and make me an overnight sensation after my HD makeover – but that surprisingly didn’t happen. In fact, I didn’t really notice a huge difference between my regular foundation.

Maybe I applied it wrong? Maybe Pat McGrath is the only person who can activate its HD magic? I wasn’t sure, so naturally I sought the advice of my personal makeup guru, Tami El Sombati. I asked her straight up if a regular joe like myself actually needs HD makeup.

The answer was a pretty solid no.

The thing with HD makeup is that it’s super lightweight, almost like a second skin. HD cameras capture images so clear that it makes you feel like Leonardo Dicaprio is in your living room (if only…), so makeup companies created a product that wouldn’t show up cakey on camera.

“In TV land, yes, everything’s HD. But if you do makeup with a light hand, it really doesn’t matter,” El Sombati explains.

So is there ever an instance where us normal ladies would need HD makeup?

“Not really,” she says. “It’s a lighter formulas or finer ground powders, which may be helpful for the average person who hasn’t quite figured out the balance of how much product to use.”

At the last minute, she added one more thing, which pretty much solidified my thoughts on investing in this type of product.

“Actually the Make Up Forever HD powder is supposedly the one that reacts badly to flash on the red carpet. You know when it looks like they have white powder streaks?”

Oh yeah, we know.
