Transform your front door into a showstopping autumnal 'doorscape' just in time for Halloween with beautiful foliage wreaths, pumpkins, garlands, flowers and artificial toadstools.

'This autumn, households will continue to focus on decorating front doors, porches, and entranceways with seasonal foliage and candle lanterns to enhance the exteriors of their homes for the cosy season ahead,' Charlotte Marchant, commercial director at Lights4fun, tells House Beautiful UK.

'With a 21 per cent increase in autumn wreath sales, we expect autumn doorscaping to remain a firm favourite for AW24, especially wreaths and garlands inspired by red robins, foraged oak leaves, pine cones, and winter berries.'

Whether it's decking out your entire front porch or simply hanging up a statement door wreath, images of beautifully dressed front doors continue to sweep across Instagram. Looking for autumn door decoration ideas? Take a look at how to create an Insta-worthy autumnal front door below:

1. Baskets

Who said wicker baskets were just for inside the home? Create a striking front door display by filling storage baskets with pumpkins, gourds and seasonal squash.

Carmel Donohue, celebrity florist and founder of Poppy Belle Florals, says: 'Baskets can be used as a standalone feature when styling a doorway or be filled with varying seasonal accessories in different textures; some crisp autumnal foliage, mini pumpkins and some hay.'

2. Mushrooms and toadstools

October is the month for wild mushroom hunting around the UK. They come in dazzling shapes and sizes, occupying woodland floors with the return of cooler, wetter weather. While edible ones are best kept in the kitchen, artificial mushrooms and toadstools make excellent seasonal accessories.

'Consider adding different-sized mushrooms or toadstools to your entranceway, and style them amongst your baskets and foliage to add depth – they really add an extra touch of autumnal wonder to your doorway,' says Carmel. 'Don't be afraid to go for a bolder or clashing colour to express your personality. Mushrooms and toadstools are an easy way to add a playful element to your overall look.'

3. Pumpkins

It wouldn't be autumn without pumpkins. From freshly-picked pumpkins to light-up designs, they are the most classic combination for decorating your front door.

'Whether you're after the classic and traditional orange, a modern monochrome or perhaps leopard print is more your style, you can really mix up your look according to your own personal style.'

Top tip: Instead of just one, opt for a variety of pumpkin styles (such as metallic, velvet, rustic orange or silver) to create a scene-stealing look.

4. Lanterns and lighting

Elevate your front door with glowing lights and lanterns. To create the best look, Carmel suggests styling them in groups of three or more, playing around with different sizes to 'accentuate your entranceway'.

For a more striking look, consider traditional tones, such as golds or silvers, as they will complement the glorious blazing colours of autumn.

5. Wreaths, garlands and flowers

Frame your door with rustic artificial flowers, wreaths and garlands. There are plenty of artificial and real options available, although they will need to be kept under a porch to avoid rain damage.

Not sure which one to choose? Carmel says: 'Wreaths provide a strong focal point for your look, while garlands are an ideal space filler, working best when draped around beams, across window ledges and even on the floor amongst your other props.

'And don't worry about getting bored of using the same one each year. You can easily and inexpensively update them by weaving new and extra faux stems or foliage into them. Consider using complementary shades, contrasting textures and different sizes to create a wreath or garland unique to your doorstep.'

6. Doormats

Designed to add a touch of warmth and charm to your doorstep, autumn doormats are the perfect way to create an inviting entrance.

'Doormats are a great way to add even more character and charm. These are the perfect finishing touch in creating an attention-grabbing doorscape that your neighbours will be desperate to recreate next year,' adds Carmel.

7. Composition

Once you've gathered all of your autumnal accessories, it's time to think about composition. How do you want to dress your space? What theme are you going for? Remember, it needs to be functional, so focus on your framing rather than simply filling the space.

Carmel suggests creating one focal point, whether that's a gorgeous wreath or a basket filled with faux foliage. 'From there, add further accents that complement your focal point. By adding elements that vary in colour, shape and height you'll easily add depth to your overall look,' she says.

'Step back every now and then to see how the look is taking shape, and don't be afraid to play around. Creating a doorscape should be fun, so enjoy the process of playing around with different props. You might not get it right the very first time, but you'll quickly understand what works in your space and what doesn't.'
