Doritos Has a New Limited-Edition Chip Launching Now
But there's a catch to try the first-of-its-kind snack.
Doritos is always on top of it with its newest innovations. Obviously, there is never a bad time for the classic Nacho Cheese-flavored tortilla chip or Patrick Mahomes’ favorite Spicy Sweet Chili flavor; however, Doritos Dinamita and Doritos Minis deserve a place in our pantry, too.
Now, the brilliant minds behind Doritos are using their chip-making skills for a good cause with the latest collab. Doritos is teaming up with the Polaris Dawn mission and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to launch a first-of-its-kind chip made just for space.
Doritos Launches New Made-for-Space Chips
Doritos Cool Ranch Zero Gravity chips have been specially formatted for the astronauts of the Polaris Dawn mission, which launches no earlier than Aug. 26. Doritos says the “made-for-space” chips have a new “space-approved” seasoning recipe “formulated to keep the zesty Cool Ranch flavor from floating away, so astronauts can enjoy them in zero gravity.”
The Zero Gravity Cool Ranch Doritos are made with an oil-based coating that keeps the seasoning on the chips. They’re also mini to ensure they’re eaten in one bite and won’t cause any crumbs that might impact the spacecraft.
While Doritos is sending its chips to space in a special tin approved for the flight, it will be sold on Earth in a limited-edition space mission-inspired canister that has glow-in-the-dark features.
To try the chips while not in orbit, Doritos fans can donate to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for a chance to get Doritos rewards—all while raising money for childhood cancer research.
Doritos’ special Zero Gravity Cool Ranch flavor is available for a $200 donation, which also includes a UV light to decode the glow-in-the-dark packaging design.
For a $50 donation, you can score a Doritos Mission t-shirt or Doritos Mission kit, complete with a patch, lapel pin, and flight tag. With a $150 donation, you’ll receive a Doritos Mission jacket; at $250, you’ll get a Doritos Mission backpack; and for a $300 donation, you’ll earn a replica of the Doritos-branded tin that went to space filled with inserts signed by the real-life crew.
The Doritos Zero Gravity Cool Ranch chips and subsequent merch are only available for a limited time while supplies last. If you can’t get your hands on the special space chips via a St. Jude’s donation, you can always try the classic Doritos minis Cool Ranch chips, which are available in stores nationwide any time of year.
They might not hold up in a zero-gravity environment, but they’ll certainly be easier to come by.
