Dries Van Noten Steps Down from His Label Victor Virgile

After nearly four decades as the creative director of his namesake label, Dries Van Noten has decided to take a final bow. His last show will be Men’s Spring 2025. A successor has not yet been named.

“In due time, we will announce the designer who will continue the story,” Van Noten told the trade publication WWD. “I have been preparing for this moment for a while, and I feel it’s time to leave room for a new generation of talents to bring their vision to the brand.”

Founded in 1986, Dries Van Noten has become synonymous with bold prints and colors, often inspired by art (a 2016 show, for example, drew from works by Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, and Elsa Schiaparelli), travel, and culture. Unlike other luxury labels, the company has long refrained from flashy marketing campaigns, a strategy that has made it a favorite among "if you know, you know" fashion enthusiasts that includes a long list of celebrities, from Beyonce to Timothee Chalamet.

Town & Country has featured Van Noten's work numerous times over the years, including, most recently, in an October 2023 issue story on the most coveted coats of this season and in another one on how fashion's cool crowd is merging Polo into their wardrobes. In our March, 2020 issue, Van Noten took center stage in the issue's editor's letter. "...What really did me in at the Dries Van Noten spring 2020 show in Paris was the bow he took with Christian Lacroix," wrote T&C Editor-in-Chief Stellene Volandes. "What's more life-affirming than a right-mind meld?"

Along with his passion for design, Van Noten is a famously ardent gardener. In 2016, he spoke to T&C about balancing his creative outlets. "In fashion we try to control everything, especially at shows, where it's all about creating a moment. But you can't control a garden, you must obey it. If it rains for a week and suddenly the sun comes out, you go home and jump on the lawn mower, even if it's the same day you have an important fitting. It's a little like having children: It forces you to reorganize your life."
