Dulé Hill Says His West Wing Character, Charlie Young, Would Be "in Congress" in 2020
Have you ever wondered what your favorite fictional characters would be doing in 2020? Well, in one case, you now have an answer. For all The West Wing fans, actor Dulé Hill just let us know what his character, Charlie Young, would be up to now.
On the show, which ended in 2006, Hill played Charlie, the personal aide to President Josiah Bartlet. Charlie acts as the President's bodyman and develops an incredibly close relationship with Bartlet. In season six (spoiler alert), Charlie gets promoted to Deputy Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff, at that point C. J. Cregg (Allison Janney), and, by the end of Bartlet's presidency, he's gained admittance to Georgetown Law School.
Now, though, fourteen years later, actor Dulé Hill gave T&C some insight about Charlie's career path. Apparently, Charlie's a congressman.
"One thing about Charlie is that he really appreciated being near the seat of power, but also living right down the block and being in the community," Hill said. "So, I believe that at this point, Charlie may have gone and worked elsewhere, but eventually he ran for Congress to be representative of his district and he won."
However, according to Hill, Charlie would be struggling with the decision to run for Senate, balancing whether he wanted to remain close to his district or pursue statewide office. Though, this is not a new dynamic for Charlie. Throughout the series, he balanced staying connected to his home and community and being near the nation's seat of power. As Hill notes, Charlie would still be tying these worlds together.
"He’s been able to leverage all these relationships that he fostered working with the president and working in this administration, but he still is very connected to his home and his neighborhood and being able to bridge the gap between the two," Hill said.
Need even more of a West Wing fix? Luckily, the cast reunited for an HBO Max special, benefiting Michelle Obama's nonprofit, When We All Vote. The special doesn't show us the cast in today's world, but instead has the present day group reenact the season three episode, "Hartsfield's Landing."
