Dumplings, boba, stick candy: New Johnson County shop offers variety of Asian treats

Bing and Tommy Tang started Freezing Moo rolled ice cream in late 2016.

They sold the concept a few years later, after it expanded in Johnson County and Wichita. Now, they’re hoping Stickman — a dumpling, “stick” treat and boba shop — will be an even bigger success.

Stickman quietly opened Thursday at 9563 Nall Ave., in an old Papa Murphy’s space. Bing hopes it will be the first of many.

“We told (investors), ‘Let’s take it easy,’” he said. “Open the first one, and see how it goes.”

Stickman sells milk tea with a variety of boba flavors: brown sugar, strawberry, lychee and more. It also offers dumplings, available in custard and red bean flavors.

Stickman sells dumplings, boba, tanghulu stick candy and other treats.

But its main attraction, and the store’s namesake, are the “stick” candies popular in Asia. They’re called tanghulu, or candied fruit on skewers. Flavors will include strawberry, blueberry and orange.

(None are available at the moment. They’re still working out the kinks, Bing said.)

Stickman also offers matcha, brown sugar coffee, oolong tea, macarons, shaved ice cream and other treats.

For now, Stickman is open for limited hours in the afternoon, 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 2 to 8 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The store may eventually extend its hours, but Bing said he wants the team to get settled before it takes on full days.

Meanwhile, Bing’s former concept, Freezing Moo, is no longer open in the Kansas City area.

It once had spots in Leawood’s Town Center at 4535 W. 119th St., 11885 W. 95th St. in Overland Park, 20140 W. 153rd St. in Olathe, 699 N.W. Blue Parkway in Lee’s Summit and 13123 State Line Road.

The last area location closed last year. One remains open in Wichita.
