As an official InStyle tester, I’m one of dozens of beauty experts responsible for recommending the best beauty and style buys. Our lists of the best hair dryers and the best hair dryer brushes are among InStyle’s most popular buying guides, in part because we're always testing—and re-testing—hot hair tools. Until recently, I only owned one high quality hair dryer—the Shark HyperAir, which gave me reliable results at a fraction of the price of the Dyson Supersonic. This year, I'm making room on my vanity for a multi-styler, but I've been torn on whether to buy the Shark FlexStyle or the Dyson Airwrap. (Psssst! They're both discounted right now!)

If I'm going to invest in anything, I avoid buyer's remorse by doing my homework before I hit the buy button. (I would have saved so much money if I'd learned that lesson in my 20s.) I didn't have time to get my hands on the Airwrap or the FlexStyle in time to make my deadline, so I poured over years of our hair tool testing results sheets, asked InStyle's beauty editors for their personal recommendations, and read the reviews for both devices on several retailer sites.

Top 3 Multi-Styler Hair Tools, According to InStyle Editors

The Dyson Airwrap Holiday Deal

News writer Sophie Wirt says the Airwrap is her secret to enviably voluminous hair. And there's no denying she's got great hair. After letting it sit unboxed for a year (!) Sophie finally saw what all the hype was about and added the tool to her hair routine. Despite the fact that she considers herself a styling novice, she found the Airwrap easy to use after watching a few YouTube tutorials and some IRL trial-and-error testing. The bottom line: Had she known that the Airwrap would provide such amazing results, Sophie would have bought it sooner—and actually saved the money she's spent on trying cheaper dupes.

The Shark FlexStyle Holiday Deal

Testers love this intuitive multi-styler, which is discounted at Amazon and Ulta right now. Just like the Airwrap, the FlexStyle produces salon-quality results on almost all hair types. Plus, it has a few bells and whistles that the Dyson doesn't: left and right indicator arrows to guide curling direction (a plus for us lefties!), and the ability to adjust the position of the tool to use it as a regular blow dryer.

The Sharper Image Holiday Deal

Sharper Image Revel Multi-Styler

$270 $148 at Amazon.com

$299 at Qvc.com

The multi-styler universe is bigger than just Shark and Dyson, so I asked around to see if there were any editors with a wild card pick. Enter freelance beauty writer Marissa Petrarca, who raves that the Sharper Image hair tool is easier to use than the Dyson and protects hair from heat damage while it styles. After side-by-side testing, she found that while the Dyson Airwrap only has one barrel, the Sharper Image Revel has a dedicated barrel for each side, a detail that can make a big difference to left-handed people like me. Also, the price.

Final Verdict

After pouring over the data, I decided to buy the Shark FlexStyle. It stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the Dyson Airwrap in terms of quality and results, but scored extra points for added features like the directional curling light. But truly, you can't go wrong with either of these tried-and-true hair tools, especially while they're both on sale.

How to Use a Multi-Styler

Once you've taken the time to practice, you can use your multi-styler to create a bouncy, at-home blowout in about the same amount of time it would take to dry your hair with a conventional hair dryer.

Start with this basic three-step technique:

  • On damp or towel-dried hair, apply a heat protectant spray. If you need a little lift, use a dollop of mousse at your roots.

  • Separate hair into small sections. Wrap each section of hair around the hot air brush, starting at the roots, and gently guide the barrel from the crown of your head all the way to the ends.

  • For a ‘90s look, use the multi-styler to flip the ends of your hair out and hit the cool shot feature to lock in shine and volume.

Why Shop With Us

Bronwyn Barnes | I have over 20 years of experience reviewing beauty products but have never owned more than one (basic) hair dryer. For this story, I spent hours reviewing insights from InStyle's always-on hair dryer testing. and surveying beauty editors and hair experts. I am not afraid to invest in an expensive hair tool, but only if it really works—but I also appreciate a good deal, since I buy many of the products I love with my own money. I live in a Shark/Ninja household and ultimately bought the Shark FlexStyle, but now that I've tested the Dyson Airwrap, I'm more open to considering a Dyson in the future.
