Elizabeth Debicki earns first Emmy for playing Princess Diana in The Crown
Elizabeth Debicki made history at the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards last night, as she took the trophy for playing Princess Diana in the final two seasons of The Crown.
The 34-year-old, who previously won a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Critics Choice Award for the role, is the first Australian actress to take home the Emmy in this category.
Taking to the stage in a black velvet Dior gown, Debicki admitted that she didn't have a speech prepared.
"I didn’t write anything down because I’m very superstitious and now I’m in a real pickle," she joked. Thanking The Crown's creator Peter Morgan, Debicki continued: "Thank you for making this show. Thank you for trusting me with this. Playing this part, based on this unparalleled, incredible human being has been my great privilege. It has been a gift."
Debicki had fierce competition in the category, going up against The Gilded Age's Christine Baranski, The Crown co-star Lesley Manville and many supporting players from The Morning Show.
Debicki played the late Princess of Wales from season five until the The Crown's sixth and final season – the latter of which covered Princess Diana's relationship with Dodi Fayed and her subsequent death in Paris.
There were no major snubs or surprises in what was considered a relatively safe night at the Emmys. FX series Shōgun took home the award for Best Drama Series, with Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai winning Best Lead Actor and Actress in a Drama Series, respectively.
Meanwhile, The Bear's Jeremy Allen White won Best Lead Actor in a comedy series, but Ayo Edebiri missed out on Best Lead Actress to Hacks star Jean Smart. Hacks also won Outstanding Comedy Series, beating expected winner The Bear.
It was a good night for Richard Gadd, with Baby Reindeer dominating the Best Limited Series category. The Netflix series, which observed a comedian and his complex relationship with his stalker after he was sexually abused, took home the trophies for Lead Actor for Gadd, Supporting Actress for Jessica Gunning, Best Limited Series and Best Writing on a Limited Series.
