Elizabeth Hurley moisturizes 10 times a day — should you?

Elizabeth Hurley is one A-lister who seems to continually defy the aging process. Her secret? She moisturizes continually.

Speaking to Woman & Home magazine, the 53-year-old said, “The one thing I swear by is moisturizer — and lots of it. I’ll moisturize my face about six times a day and my neck about 10 times a day.”

Genius skincare trick or a waste of time? Yahoo Style U.K. contacted Dr. Justine Hextall, consultant dermatologist at the U.K.’s Tarrant Street Clinic, to find out whether people should be following Hurley’s lead to keep their skin looking younger.

“I absolutely agree hydrating skin is important in order to protect the skin barrier and prevent moisture loss,” she said. “However, I would question the need to apply moisturizer 10 times a day. I wonder if Hurley may need to look at her cleansing regime, which may be drying out her skin and requiring her to apply all this moisturizer.

“If the skin cleansing routine is too harsh then the skin starts to lose water during the day and can become dry and feel tight.”

Dr. Hextall also warned that skin might react badly to certain ingredients in moisturizer if it is applied too often. For instance, frequent application of an oily, heavy moisturizer might have a comedogenic (i.e., pore-clogging) effect.

Bottom line: Go easy on the moisturizer — though there’s certainly no shame in wanting Hurley’s timeless look for yourself.
