Emma Stone Basically Wore Julia Roberts’s Dress From ‘Pretty Woman’ to the BAFTA Tea Party
On Saturday, Emma Stone arrived at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards annual Tea Party at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles — a kind of precursor to today’s Golden Globes — in a red carpet look that looked all too familiar. Her brown and white polka-dot tea-length dress was reminiscent of one of the most iconic silver-screen looks of the ’90s, in fact.
The Diane von Furstenberg frock was a dead ringer for the dress worn by Julia Roberts in her breakout hit Pretty Woman. In the film, Roberts’s character, Vivian Ward — the most glamorous adult escort to grace the silver screen since Audrey Hepburn’s Holly Golightly — wears the dress with a matching sunhat to a polo match with her billionaire beau. It was 1990, though, so the look is a bit dated, but Stone’s version is the chic update we’ve been waiting for.
The La La Land star complemented it perfectly with a pair of pointed Jimmy Choo ankle-stap stilettos (Roberts wore white pumps with a low heel), an up ’do, a fresh face, and minimal accessories, which included an Alezan ring. But there are some variations in Stone’s version. Unlike Roberts’s onscreen dress, which had a high crop neck, Stone’s DVF silhouette boasts a halter top that works wonders with the playful pattern.
This isn’t the first update we’ve seen on the Pretty Woman dress, though. In May 2015, retail chain Zara reproduced the look in its summer collection. Zara’s version was airier and included a strappy, open back, and it lacked the cinched waist of the original. As the Zoe Report put it, the polka-dot number was “the more casual, on-the-go style of today’s polo match-bound girl.”
Just two days ago, Stone rocked another tea-length dress — a bright yellow flower-print design from Gucci’s Spring/Summer 2017 Collection — to a party for W magazine. This one was not a throwback, though. In fact, it featured three of 2017’s most prominent fashion trends: ruffles, one-shoulder tops, and bright prints.
Stone is nominated for a Best Actress Golden Globe for her musical turn in La La Land opposite Ryan Gosling, so we’ll be champing at the bit to see her one-up her polo-match/tea party look and the Gucci number. If Stone’s bold decision to rock a Lanvin jumpsuit to the 2016 Golden Globes red carpet is any indication, we’re in for something incredible.
