Ernest W. Baker Gives New Shape to Its Tailoring

Ernest W. Baker’s initial inspiration for fall 2025 came from the surrealistic horror film “Fog,” by John Carpenter, from 1980. Its aesthetic helped influence the brand’s video and look book.

“But also we started to look at those metaphors with fog that the director plays with in the movie,” said Reid Baker, one-half of the design duo behind the label.

He and Inês Amorim thought of how both fog and fashion are all-consuming. “Having a brand and working in fashion is incredibly challenging, but there’s something beautiful,” said Baker, adding one gets so immersed in developing clothes that all external noise is blocked out.

That’s important in creating, for instance, handmade knitwear. In this collection it came embellished with practically couture details, such as Swarovski crystals.

Baker and Amorim played with classic sartorial fabrics, like checks with houndstooth, patching them together for a modern twist. In suiting, the spacing between pinstripes varied.

“There’s a structure and rigidness … and a new shape of tailoring as well,” said Baker.

Each Ernest W. Baker collection begins with brown garments. For fall, that palette was expanded into beiges, burnt orange and a vintage green – that the designers described as emerging from a fog.

Footwear included an Eighties hiking boot and sharp-toed classic shoes, which were meant to be paired well with skinny pants – a departure from their original Seventies flared pant.

“Every collection is evolving from the previous collections,” said Baker. There might be no revolution, but Ernest W. Baker’s evolution is striking.
