If you know me, you know I’m a huge fan of Everlane’s Day Gloves (I literally own five pairs and rotate them pretty much every day).

So when I was recently browsing Everlane’s new arrivals section of their site and noticed a brand new shoe, The Leather Slip-On, I knew I had to try them out.

I immediately ordered the Slip-On ($165 CAD) in dusty lilac (the prettiest pink for spring) — and now that I’ve had the chance to wear the shoes for a couple of weeks, I thought it might be worth it to compare how they measure up to my treasured Day Gloves ($152 CAD).

I’ll start by comparing the styles. The Day Glove, while beloved by many, is also divisive: the high vamp and, well, glove-like fit that molds to your foot isn’t for everyone. While I love the vamp (at this point, I don’t know if I could go back to a lower cut shoe), I get that the look isn’t for everyone. The Leather Slip-On still has the lightweight glove fit, but features a more traditional loafer-style vamp that feels a bit more universal. These also feel a little bit more office appropriate to me if you work in a corporate setting. And while I love how the Slip-Ons look with straight-leg jeans, I think that come summer I’ll be sticking to the Day Gloves when I wear dresses — but again, personal preference there.

Another thing I love about the Leather Slip-Ons are that they have elastic detailing. One major complaint about Everlane’s shoes (from both my personal experience and online reviews) is that they run super narrow. I have a medium width, fairly flat foot, and I find that I have to size up at least a half size in most of their shoes for comfort. When I got my first pair of Day Gloves, they were so tight across the top of the foot that I seriously considered sending them back. While they stretched over a few wears, I can see how they would still be an issue for anyone with a wider foot. While I still find the Slip-Ons to run narrow (I’d still suggest sizing at least a half size up), the elastic detailing does quicken that break in period.

In terms of comfort post break-in, these two shoes are equally matched. The Leather Slip-Ons feature the same cushioned foot bed and pull on tab as the Day Gloves, which makes them easy for office wear, commuting — or really anything. And like the Day Gloves, these are easy to throw in your bag when you know you’ll be needing comfortable footwear.

Currently, the Leather Slip-Ons come in five colours: black, white, lemon, dusty lilac and silver. As I mentioned, dusty lilac is such a perfect shade for spring - and if they release a new Day Glove launch in that colour, I’ll definitely be buying.

So what’s the verdict? When it comes to comfort, these are pretty evenly matched. The Leather Slip-On might have a slight advantage because of its elastic detailing. Style and colour-wise, it really comes down to personal preference. Personally, I’ll be a Day Glove lover forever, but I’m glad I added the slightly more tailored shoes to my rotation.
