Everything You Need to Know About the LVMH Finalists

Read on for all the important info on LVMH's eight finalists.

Only eight young designers remain in the running for LVMH’s (LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE) prestigious prize.

An eclectic mix of established talent and bona fide up-and-comers, this year’s sartorial savants hail from all over (from the U.K. to Syria), and showcase an even broader range of creativity.

The designers, whose next hurdle involves showing their work to an industry-heavy jury (comprised of high-power names like Karl Lagerfeld, Nicolas Ghesquière, Marc Jacobs, and Riccardo Tisci), will learn the contest’s verdict come June.

Yoon (Ambush)

Co-founded with her musician husband, Verbal, Ambush evolved from the Tokyo-based power couple’s 2002 design company. Initially specializing in album artwork for various artists, the company’s latest incarnation features unisex clothing and bold accessories.

(Shortlist Focus) Experimental jewelry and apparel inspired by the way people live have defined the creative DNA of @yoon_ambush's label AMBUSH®, launched with VERBAL in 2008. She has collaborated with Louis Vuitton (Kim Jones), Sacai and UNDERCOVER and was recognized by Pharrell Williams who personally selected her to work on the Adidas SUPERSTAR campaign. Antonin Tron (Atlein)

Tron (whose resume includes consulting gigs with Balenciaga, Raf Simons, Givenchy, and Louis Vuitton) launched French fashion house Atlein out of his apartment in 2016.

(Shortlist Focus) Antonin Tron was schooled in Antwerp at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and before cutting his teeth in the design teams at Givenchy, Louis Vuitton, and Balenciaga. His label @atleinparis is the 2016 recipient of the ANDAM Prix Des Premières Collection and stocked by Net-a-Porter, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Ikram, The Webster and Boon the Shop. Cecilie Bahnsen

The Danish designer and former John Galliano intern has continually stood out at Copenhagen fashion week. Her eye-catching modern designs have appeared at Dover Street Market New York.

(Shortlist Focus) Danish designer @ceciliebahnsen has made a name for herself with her namesake womenswear label, launched in 2015. She draws inspiration from traditional techniques and uses them in new and exploratory ways and her simple and feminine silhouettes work as canvases for delicate embroidery and fabric combinations that underline an understanding of both structure and craftsmanship. Maria Kazakova (Jahnkoy)

A self-proclaimed “multi disciplinary artist,” Kazakova’s menswear collection of sporty, out-of-the-box pieces (Jahnkoy) translates to “New Spirit Village.”

(Shortlist Focus) Born and raised in Siberia, Russia, @jahnk0y is a New York based visual artist, whose work is based on the examination of consumer habits with an emphasis on crafts and materials and a focus on the preservation of tradition through sustainability. The artist’s predilection for recycling and repurposing, and her appreciation of craft are demonstrated in the intricate and delicate embroidery, beading, weaving and crochet merging traditional craftsmanship into everyday wear and found objects, displacing them from their usual habitat. Molly Goddard

The London-based designer’s delicately crafted collection stretches tulle far beyond its previously imagined reach.

(Shortlist Focus) @mollymgoddard specialises in traditional hand-craft techniques such as hand pleating, smocking and crocheting. Her collections are held in some of the most prestigious stockists worldwide including Dover Street Market, Trading Museum Comme des Garcons, I.T, Browns, Boon the Shop and Club 21 and won the Emerging Talent award at the 2016 Fashion Awards. Her work touches upon themes of special occasions, nostalgia and coming of age, often taking inspiration from party dressing and Sunday best. Kozaburo Akasaka (Kozaburo)

The Japanese menswear designer mines inspiration from the ‘90s street style of his native country.

(Shortlist Focus) Having grown up during the 90s in Japan, @kozaburoakasaka's aesthetic is heavily inspired by music subcultures and the various street styles he was exposed to during that period. Timeless design of classic men’s apparel is at the core of his aesthetic. The juxtaposition of high fashion and street culture has come to define the uniquely poetic and contemporary - yet not temporary – style of KOZABURO. Marine Serre

The French up-and-comer’s oeuvre is marked by her bold use of color and an unexpected tendency toward athletic design elements.

(Shortlist Focus) Franco-Belgian designer @marine.serre's collection, Radical Call for Love, combines 19th century Arab luxurious garments (caftan, karakou, sirwal, etc.) with corporate sportswear trends of the 1990s and 2000s, and projects the result in a futurist oriented fashion. Radical Call for Love is all about expressing and working with actually existing links, in Brussels where the Call was conceived, and in the world at large. Nabil El-Nayal (Nabil Nayal)

(Shortlist Focus) Nabil El-Nayal, the designer behind ready-to-wear brand @nabilnayal was born in Syria and moved to England at the age of 14. Nabil's obsession with Elizabethan craftsmanship has deeply informed his practice; seen through his use of pleats, dramatic construction and powerful silhouettes. Whilst this backdrop of historical references remains at the heart of the brand, Nabil is also conducting extensive research into ways in which these techniques can be applied, using the latest technologies. He was the first fashion designer in the world to use 3D printing in June 2010 and is currently undertaking a research doctorate in how 3D scanning can become integral to the design process. He was a shortlisted finalist in the 2015 #lvmhprize. #youngdesigners #womanswear
